The great world wide known Irish writer have spend a part of his life in the town of Pula teaching English language. The school was right next to the famous Arch of Sergeius Family, also the apartment where James Joyce were lived. A foot of his home there was an cafe-bar, at the very same spot where the new one was reopened, and it was the writer favorite place where he used to spend hours watching locals passing by. Nowadays, here stands the statue of James Joyce, great writer sitting in the shadow of the ancient Roman Arch, do not miss it when visiting Pula. Leave a Comment

by JLBG Some of these "barracks looking building" were equipped with huge wires for drying the laundry that made a kind of cobweb. If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you will see them more clearly. Only a few of them were in use when I took the picture. When it is big laundry day, the sight must be really amazing. I had never seen so many wires ! Leave a Comment

by JLBG Driving to Milan from the city center by the right way, we found this imposing church. It does not seem very old and is not mentioned in any of my guidebooks, but I felt it was aesthetic and looked pretty. Thanks to boris VT Croisbeauty that identified it for me and gave the following comment. This huge church, situated on the hill of St. Polycarp, is called Our Lady of the Sea, colloquially known as Mornaricka crkva (the navy church). It is three-nave basilica and has the plan of a Latin cross with a semi-circular apse. The church was built (1891-1898) in mixed neo-Romanesque and neo-Byzantine styles. The walls are built of alternating white Istrian stone and red marble. Leave a Comment

by JLBG This picture shows in the background the buildings of the new part of Pula, in the South of the old city. We have not visited it (sorry Niksa !) but may be we will do it next time ! As this seems to be really new, there might have some architectural interest. To be followed ! Leave a Comment

Venecijanska palaca u Kandlerovoj by croisbeauty Being a very important military port throughout the passing centuries, the town of Pula have suffered of the major distractions from the air, especially in the WW II. There are not much of the palaces left in the old core of the town. This Venetian styled palace is situated in the Kandlerova street, just a foot from the Forum and the Cathedral. Leave a Comment

by JLBG This fountain flows near the city market, which is in the background. Just behind the fountain, if you enlarge the picture, you can see three of these sewer man-holes made of might-have-been-gold I presented as a close-up in the introduction ! Leave a Comment

by JLBG As it was very hot, we sat at a terrace to sip a beer. As it was in front of this church, that is why I had plenty of time to take several photos ! As you can see, modern frescoes have been painted in some of the niches. Leave a Comment
