Probably on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the building of the city market, a decor picturing a female customer from the 1900 period has been displayed. She does not wear any hat, which means she is not a lady as it would have been very inappropriate for a lady to go out with hair showing ! She, then must be the maid of a wealthy family !

No other fish market in Istria can compete with Pula. It has all sorts of fish and seafood, and everything is of the highest freshness. Here there are brancin (sea perch) and dagnje (mussels). In the middle of the picture, there are various fish that are tasty but full of bones and good for fish soup.

Here, you will also find all of these fishes. Istria (Pula) is most probably, one of the places where I have found the greatest variety of fishes and crustaceans, with some species, for example the famous fangtooth murray that the Roman emperors used to feed with enemies. I had never tasted one and would have liked to try !

Here, you will find Brancin (sea perch), Barbun (red mullet), List (sole), Tunj (thunny), gamba (shrimp). On the next booth, there were Musule (Noah's arches) which are not often found on markets, but not very tasty. Everything comes directly from the neighboring sea and is therefore of the most absolute freshness !

In this booth, there is much variety : srdel (sardins), barbłn (red mullet), list (dover sole or common sole), skuse (mackerel), Skusa (atlantic mackerel), racici (shrimps) and a lot of other items. In another booth, there were Ugor (fangtooth murray). I would like to have tasted it but we were not to go "home" until late evening and it would not have kept well for such a long time, owing to the temperature. Too bad !

The black marble plate says (in Italian) : "Built by the city in 1903, beeing in charge Lodovico Rizzi, ingeneer, Jacopo Lodovico Münz, the ironwork from the plant in Witkowitz" (the translation may need some editing !).

Nota : Vitkovice (or Witkowitz) is now in the Czech republic. The Witkowitz ironworks were bought by Salomon von Rothschild in 1843.

Watermelons are a big crop in Croatia and BTW everywhere in the Balkans. That reminds me of a traffic jam, in 1975, at the border between Greece and Yugoslavia with hundreds of small Zastava 500, each with several watermelons stowed on top of the car.
Now Croatia seems to be completely self-sufficient regarding watermelons !

The various regions of Croatia produce a fair variety of cheese. Though cow, goat and ewe cheese are all produced, ewe cheese is apparently what is the most produced. The famous Paski sir (cheese from the isle of Pag) is one of them and the best. It is very tasty. There are plenty of other Croatian cheese. I will try to make a travelogue on these cheeses.

Local producers gather under the plane-trees. They sell tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, potatoes, egg-plants, paprikas, salads, etc.. You should find here everything you need. The onions are sweet and can be eaten raw. We always bring back 10-15 kilograms home !

This picture gives a close up on the steel work of the city market and more specifically on the delicately designed balustrade of the first floor. It may not be the original one as the style looks more recent and might be 1920-1930.
