Roman Theatre by montezaro There were two theatres in Pula in Roman times, one on the top of the Montezaro Hill (only a fragments of it left now) and the second one on the Ka?tel Hill, which can be seen on this picture. It is situated right behind the Archaeological Museum of Istria. Ka?tel Hill dominates the huge port of Pula and here you can see the remains of the fortress from where the Romans have controlled this strategicaly important point. Leave a Comment

Renaissance arcading of the city palace by montezaro The city palace was altered on several occasions, and various levels can be observed, from the Romanesque and all the way to the Baroque. The principal, south facade, was renovated in the 16th century, when it was given a Renaissance porch. This is the look of the Renaissance arcading on the front facadeof the building. Pula, the arena in 2004 by JLBG What is different ? The arena had not changed much in 20 centuries, it has not changed neither in 30 years. What has changed is the amount of tourists. In 2004, in Summer, busses come, unload flocks of tourists, leave and come back later to upload them. Advice : either come early in the morning or avoid 20th July till 20th August ! Leave a Comment

The Franciscan Monastery by montezaro The Franciscan monastery was built at the same time as the church, but it was altered in the 15th century. The columns of the cloister are of early renaissance characteristics. A collection of medieval stones, property of the Archaeological Museum of Istria, is on exhibition in the cloister. Pula, the arena in 1975 by JLBG The arena was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD and the Flavius emperors added some parts in 69-96 AD. It is the 6th by it's size but on of the best preserved. Its size is 132m x 105m. The outer wall has three levels of vaulted windows. The forth level has square windows. This is how it looked in 1975. Leave a Comment

Pula, the arena ready for a show by JLBG Especially in Summer, the arenas allow to display various shows that take advantage of the fabulous surroundings made by the stepped rows of seats and the outer walls ! In arenas, the sound is very good though it is better in Roman theaters where the sounds "reflects" on the front wall. Leave a Comment

Pula, bird's eye view on the arena by JLBG It is a good idea to walk (climb !) to the heights of Pula, towards the castle. From some places, it is possible to have a magnificent landscape on the arena, in its frame of houses. Note also that it might be also a good idea to park your car in this area, far enough from the arena. You will find free car parking spaces. Leave a Comment

Trg Portarata aka Giardini by JLBG Trg Portarata, colloquially called Giardini (thanks to Boris, VT Croisbeauty) viewed here from the top of the stairs leading to the city walls, is shaded by old plane trees. In summer 2004, they had been severely trimmed the previous winter and did not give as much shade as they used to do. It was built on the site where was the ancient Roman cemetery, just outside the city walls (thanks to Boris). Leave a Comment Address: Trg Portarata !

Pula, Ulica Sergijevaca by JLBG Ulica Sergijevaca is running from west to east, with a gentle bend. Then, the sun never hits directly any part of the street very long. In early morning and in late afternoon, the sun will directly hit only parts of it. Around noon, there will always be one side of the street that has a strip of shade. This is one reason why this street is so popular for wandering. Leave a Comment

Pula, alley viewed from Ulica Sergijevaca by JLBG When you wander in Ulica Sergijevaca, from time to time, you will see small alleys that climb steeply towards Ulica Castropola and the castle. My advice is better to follow Ulica Sergijevaca until the forum and Kandlerova ulica and then to take follow Ulica Castropola : it will not be so steep ! Leave a Comment
