The whole area in front of the Communal Palace and Temple of Augustus was being excavated, in search of the Roman Forum.
One day (if no more war comes to change things) it will be presented and explained. When we were there, only enclosed rocks and fences could be seen.
In its long history the town of Pula had many masters and all of them used to change the name of the main city square,( constructed in Roman times), but for it citizens this square was always known and recognized by the name of Forum. Actually, in Latin forum is expression for open city space where local people gather together for trading, political purposes or just to socializing.
For most of the tourists or visitors, Forum is place to start or to end the exploring of Pula. It is nice place for the first morning coffe or for the last drink in the hot summer nights.
Like all Roman towns of some importance, Pula has a Forum in the centre of town near the shores of the Adriatic, although when I was there in June 2006, it was a mess of construction. The Forum today is more remarkable for what surrounds it than anything that occurs there. It is where the Temple of Augustus and the Town Hall are located, in addition to some of Pula's more famous cafés.
The town hall is on the left of this other picture of the forum. On the right, is one of the numerous (five or six ?) restaurants and bars that have their terraces on the forum, making it very lively in summer time.
The forum at last ! Ulica Sergijevaca may be not very long, it is most of the time, in Summer, so packed with people walking from Sergius gate to the forum and back that it seems longer than it is !
This is the Town hall (Gradska palaca), built in a 13th century over a Roman Temple. Several walls of the Roman Temple have been used in the new building. The vaulted windows are clearly in "Rinascimento" style.
A ways into the center, there's a big square that is home to the old Roman Forum, it looks like the ones in Greece. If you can't find it on the map, it's right across the street from the tourist information
The Forum is a lovely square near to the harbour in Pula. Three sides of the square contain cafes and bar’s whilst the fourth side has the temple of Romae and Augustus and the town hall.
