The Portal of the church of Our Lady of the Sea and the walls are built of alternating white Istrian stone and red marble, thus creating a vivid decorative composition with horizontal bands. The church is richly decorated , ecpecially in front. The main portal is of neo-Romanesque characteristics, with jutting gable supported by columns tied symbolically in a mariners' knot, the so-called Samson's knot and resting on semi-recumbent lions. A mosaic of Madonna with Angels decorates the lunette of the portal.
The profusion of outside decoration is matched by the rich interior, dominated by the mosaic below the triumphal arch of the apse, with the figure of Our Lady of the Sea in the centre, surrounded with St. Nicholas, St. Paul, St. Peter and St. Barbara.

Very interesting and picturesque is the navy Church of Our Lady of the Sea (1891-1898) located on the hill of St. Polycarp. It was started by the architect Von Schmidtand continued by Victor Lunz. But it was Natale Tommasi, a builder from Trident, who did the greatest part of the work, particularly as regards the appearance and decoration.
The church is three-nave basilica, it has plan of a Latin cross with a semi-circular apse, and it was built in mixed neo-Romanesque and neo-Byzantine styles.
