We wandered around the narrow street of Pula near the castle on a sunny afternoon in October. It was so quiet and peaceful that I felt transported back thousands of years. I do not think much has changed in these streets since they were built.

Pula amphitheatre is one of the six largest roman amphitheatres in existence today. It was originally a smaller theatre built by Claudius until the Vespians enlarged it in AD 79. It was enlarged for the gladiator fights that would see 23,000 spectators and it had 20 entrances.
It was intact until the 15th century when parts were of the stone were used to build the castle and other buildings in the city.
Now it is used for musical events and can seat 5,000 people.

In the past, the whole city was surrounded by walls and was entered through about ten gates.

The Twin Gates (there are two arches), were built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and they lead to the Archaeological Museum and the Castle.

In its long history the town of Pula had many masters and all of them used to change the name of the main city square,( constructed in Roman times), but for it citizens this square was always known and recognized by the name of Forum. Actually, in Latin forum is expression for open city space where local people gather together for trading, political purposes or just to socializing.
For most of the tourists or visitors, Forum is place to start or to end the exploring of Pula. It is nice place for the first morning coffe or for the last drink in the hot summer nights.

A small chapel was added on the south side in the 13th century, which serves today as the vestry.
The freestanding bellfry was completed in 1707, and a lot of stones from the amphitheatre were used for its foundation.
A very early church of St. Thomas , built in the turn of the 4th and 5th century, was formerly in a small park along the south side of the cathedral, but it was demolished in 1657. The last remain of the building were visible as late as 1812. Fragments of the original marble septum, a vary fine work from the turn of above mentioned centuries, and early Romanesque capitals of later data are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Istira.
