The largest and the most important building erected in Pula during Byzantine rule was the basilica of St. Maria Formosa. The complex of the church built in 6th century did not withstand the ravages of time. The Venetians afflicted heavy damages as early as 13th century, and written reports from 16th century inform that the church was in dilapidated conditions. Only the south funerary chapel that was annexed to the church has managed to survive completely.

Of the early Christian sacral objects, which abounded in Pula, the architecture of the cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been preserved to a considerable extent. The whole group of early Christian buildings was erected immediately within the city walls in the course of 4th and i 5th century. It grew at the site of an earlier classical building, perhaps public bath. It is probable that a secret Christian cultic space had existed there at the time when Christianity was a forbidden religion in the Rokan Empire.
The present building is from 5th century and It is a large basilica with a nave and two aisles, 50 meters long and 21 meters wide.
When visiting it, do not miss to see the remains of the original floor mosaics from 5th century.

Top example of the historical "salad" that Croatia became, here we have a historical building using old remains of other historical buildings. It's a hard and respectful effort to preserve, but it is also a visual mess. Till now, the final and prevailing style is Venetian. But... till when? Impressive, again!

Cafes and Konobas (taverns) are packed with cappuccino revellers in the town centre every Saturday morning. Pick up a pastry or burek (a pie) from a nearby pekara (bakery) and grab a seat or corner in one of the cafes. Good coffee can be found anywhere.

Dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, the Temple was constructed between 2 BC and 14 AD. Situated in the Forum (the ancient administrative heart of Pula), the Temple's function changed over the years (after the pagan ancient era); as a church, wheat storage and housed stone monuments. The Temple was almost destroyed by a bomb in 1945. It was reconstructed between 1945 and 1947. Today, the Temple is a 'mini' museum for ancient stone and bronze sculptures.
It's an ideal spot to sit on the stone steps, snap some photos (loads of tourists here in summer!), and watch the world go by, or you can try one of the few 'touristy' cafes in the perimetre of the Forum.

What would any trip to an ex-Yugoslav city be without seeing at least one Communist monument? There aren't a lot in the centre of Pula, but you can catch a glimpse of one on the way into town from the bus station. It isn't all that big, but the write up is in Italian and Croatian and its dedicated to the youth of the town and those who helped liberate it from the forces of fascism.

The centre of Pula can feel a bit touristy, especially during the summer, and it can be difficult to get that atmospheric sensation that Croatia is so great at creating. Rather than wading through the crowds, you might consider taking a bit of walk along the streets near the train station. There are quite a few Hapsburg era buildings there in an area that is very quiet and perfect for taking pictures.

This was the first place in Pula where I actually felt like I was in a touristy place. Perhaps that was because this is such a wide open space that connects the old city and the Roman ruins with the much more modern are of the Giardini and the market. The Arch of the Sergians is also known as Zlatna vrata or Golden Gate and was built in 30 BCE by Salvia Postuma Sergia. The side of the Gate facing the older parts of town contains the more interesting engravings with stories of the victories of the Sergia family.
