Fra - Kat: The daily fresh seafood

by croisbeauty

The restaurant "Fra - Kat" is situated in a small village of Premantura, about 10 kolometres south of Pula. It is easy accessible, or by the local bus or by car. This is the best seafood restaurant in whole Istria, maybe even in whole Croatia. You have to trust my judgement, because I was born and have rised-up on Adriatic coast.First of all, the food is very fresh because one of the owners-partners is the local fishermen, and the other partner is widely known as the exceptional cook.Anything you order is fresh and tasty.

Konoba “Stare Užance” Premantura: Nice for summer evening after a Kamnjak sunny day

by traveller3

The restaurant is very nice and friendly. Runnings by some young people. There is no menu, the staff recommend you the daily possibilities when you'd like to order. It is one of the few dining places open throughout the year in Premantura. The exterior is inviting and warm, inside the classical istrian rustic style with old wooden tables and chairs with some modern (some times ironic) details, like red papier-mâché roses and red curtains hanging from the ceiling. Creative atmosphere. In the summer high season the reservation in advance is recomended, without it if you are lucky, the table on street under an old mulberry tree till wait for you. They serve good local vines, and use local materials for foods. (respect)I know the kitchen is not the peak of gastronomy (nor hill of them), but the feeling is good, service is personally. I think it's a good example in contrast of mass tourist...

Konoba Astarea: Try the grilled fish

by MikeBird

We'd been recommended to this small restaurant by the local lady who looks after the house we stayed in. She said it was very special and she was right. We spent our final night in the small town of Brtonigla in this lovely, warm, friendly and atmospheric restaurant. It was December 29th and cold outside but the moment we stepped in there was a terrific warmth from glowing embers of the grill on the open hearth. There were interesting local pictures and artefacts covering the walls to give the place a real community feel - we got the impression this was more a place for locals than tourists but as it was quite quiet with only about 3 or 4 other parties that was hard to be sure. The food was really great - my wife and I really enjoyed the large, grilled Sea Bass which came with other fresh vegetables. My vegetarian son was well looked after with a special pasta dish and my young daughter...

Pod Ladonjon: Delicious from Istria

by croisbeauty

The small town of Žminj is situated in the central part of Istrian peninsula, not very far from Pazin and Rovinj.Since it is a small village, you can't miss the restaurant "Pod Ladonjon", which offers very specific food, much different then in the other parts of Croatia. Altgough similiar to the Italian, Istrian cuisine is the specific one. You shouldn't miss to taste "fuži", hand-made pasta with vegetables, truffels and meat, I suggest you dish with venison. The next dish I suggest is "ombolo" with sauerkraut. It is impossible to translate what ombolo means, but it is the best existing part of pork meat. Each one of the diches costs around 45kn, which is approx. 6,00 euros

barbacan , restaurant and enoteca: istrian cuisine with a twist.....yes, truffles

by rageul

Small charming restaurant and wine bar just before the main city gate in the uppertown on the left hand side. The menu is creatively using local recipes and ingredients and this chef is cooking on a astonishing level. It turned out that he cooked in italy , france and ireland before and is some local tv chef in croatia. a good mix of fresh seafood, truffels , various mushrooms and all nicely prsented and tickling our tastebuds. you must try the home made paté with black truffels and crostini or the panna cotta with black truffles....good selection of wine , relaxed (not touristic) ambiance and music and above all we felt at ease and forgot about time......we just entered for luch and when we came out 2 hours had past, after sightseeing we came back to barbacan and sat on the terrace, overlooking cobbly streets and the valley we enjoyed prob. the best chardonnay we've had in...

Zigante: Truffels! Guiness world record here!

by FRONA

The local Truffle hunter's family business, very nice environment, cool in the hot summers, slow food available, art food but with a local touch is what makes it so special. The place also has a little shop where you can buy the Elixir of Life (herb drink), black trufflel pate, black olive pate and other local specialties. The prices are acceptable. I am not completely happy with the interior because it is a bit eclectic. There are funky metal threaded pillars inside and I dont get what they are meant for. Fuži s tartufima. Its an Istrian classic, domestic pasta called "Fuži" (can translate as Snails), with black or white truffles... Simple and piccant, with a glass of wine its a true aphrodisiac :)

Dopolavoro: Great food in the cosiness of Ucka mountaintop

by FRONA

This cosy little restaurant is located almost at the top of Ucka mountain that connects regions of Istra and Primorje in Croatia, just above the cities of Opatija and Rijeka. Its interior reminds me of a hunters hut, stuffed animals and animal skins characteristic to the area are very interesting and a bit scary. If you are a biker, its a great pit stop and you can even inquire about possibilities of overnight stay. If you are a keen meat eater, you can find all game meat from bear to fazant.

KUKURIKU: Slow food again!

by FRONA

Its one of the most appreciated slow food restaurants in Croatia and of course Istria. Call to reserve, usually its packed. The story goes that the chef cook takes a look at you when you come in and according to his gut feeling he suggests something special for you. I love the fact that its on a hill above Rijeka/Opatija so when its hot in the summer its nice and cool there! no favorite

La Luna: Join the locals

There aren't many eateries around Glavani / Barban but can recommend this one.The staff are friendly, the food is good and it's cheap too.
