Strategically located on top of the hill overlooking the adriatic, it would be easy to be on the look out for enemies coming from the sea. There was a chapel in the fortress, as you may now see only the foundations remain. The visit inside is well worthwile. Hard to resist in the summer time because of the heat, the Adriatic sea is a gem. The water is so clear it is amazing! The beaches are rocky, and not sandy but Europeans are used to that and a lot say they prefer rocks to sand. At least you don't get them in your pants!!! Leave a Comment |
You can't miss it, it's on top of the hill. Inside, there is a little museum, with well made explanations about the history of the fortress, the battles that took place in Senj, some of the costumes that were worn a long time ago and so on. It is inexpensive and well worth it. Bonus: the views from up there are incredible! Leave a Comment |
Senj is a typical Croatian coastal town. It is seated at a conjunction of the sea and a little barren bay, on the borderline between two mountains, Velebit and Kapela. The first photo shows the southern part of the city (from the fortress) The second photo shows a fisher man boat back from a fishing session. People come on the quay to buy fresh fish directly on board. The third photo shows the northern part of the city, mainly new houses. The fourth photo was taken in 1989 and shows the southern part of the city from the quay. In the background, Nehaj fortress. Leave a Comment |
A little further stands a smaller unnamed fountain. It is made with the head of a fat man, supposedly spitting water but actually, it does not flow ! It looks very old but the carving underneath the head (second photo) says "god 1934". It should then have been built in 1934. Is the head older, I do not know, may be ! Leave a Comment |
In the bottom of the yard, the tables of a restaurant have been set up. We have not tried it but only drinken a fresh beer. In the middle, the curbstone of the well is made of a superb single stone. It is still fitted with a pulley and could be used if needed ! Leave a Comment |
In the middle of Trg Marka Balena or Velika Placa (Square Marko Balen or Main Square) stands a classical fountain called Kaietan Knezi?'s fountain built in the beginning in 1845 and restored in 1945. Unfortunately, the square is now used as a parking and flooded by cars. The fountain is almost hidden behind the cars. Without cars, it was considered as one of the most beautiful baroque squares of the Adriatic coast. Leave a Comment |
In the museum, several dozens of stone heads of Uskok citizens of Senj are on display. I have taken only two of them that seemed the mot characteristic. Compare with the head over the entrance of Danicic Palace. Most are represented with big mustaches and a ferocious look ! Leave a Comment |
In the old town, ancient palaces are many. However, the economy of Senj has been severely hit by the recent war and money is often lacking. Though some of the palaces have been restored, others remain in poor condition and need at least some face lift and painting. With tourists coming back, I guess it will be done soon. On Trg Mirka Ozegovica stands another fountain. This one has a modern tap but it does not flow, neither. It has a commemorative carving which is hardly readable. The only thing I have been able to decipher is that it was built in 1888. Leave a Comment |
