  • Unfortunately I had to interrupt my holiday unexpected. I was touched of my friends' solidarity - we all went home, but we decided to come and see island Krk and the town Vrbnik again. There is so much more to see and to do.
And at the end - coming back to the parking place we found the wheel of our car in fetters.
    Bad luck!

  • Among restaurants (Konoba) eateries, pubs and caffeeteries, restaurant "Nada" is very popular and highly recomanded. Everybody knows where it is. On my photo is one of outdoor servings where you can have beer or excellent wine or something "stronger".

  • Due to its geographical position, the town Vrbnik is a marvellous viewpoint.
Crikvenica, the continental town seems to be so close. Crikvenica is approachable either by sea or you can take a little longer but very attractive way across the hinterland and over the bridge folowing street signs .

  • Vrbnik is one of the beautiful towns situated on the island of Krk. It is about 37 km faraway from the bridge of Krk. Vrbnik is considered one of the oldest settlement on the island of Krk. It is located immediately above the sea on the cca 50 m high cliff, and the access from the sea side is very difficult There is a pretty steep road going from the port to the city.

  • As it is still seen, Vrbnik dated back into Prehistoric or Stone and Bronze Age. Croats settled on the island of Krk at the end of 6th century. In the Medivial Age it became a castle with more than 500 inhabitants. Old town core spreads over the hill topped with bell tower of Church of Our Lady. Streets are extremly narrow, one of them is quite so narrow, that only one after one can walk.

  • Colorful flowers and herbs as rosemay and sage are seen in every corner of the houses. I adore their gardens with smell of lavender and rosemary with olive tree and at least one fig tree. By the way - figs are my favourite fruit.

Vrbnik is a small town full of tales and legends.
  • Tip Rating:
  • MALICsIcsI (small people)

During long winter nights neighbours would often gather in one of their houses. And while fire from an open hearth warmed the elders seated as close to it as possible,an invisible hand was drawing vivid, restless images over the walls of barely lit rooms, like they were pages of some magical picture-book.Strange figures moved all over the room, they grew, bended, twisted and next moment they were gone. Then the story-telling began,of ancient events and unusual encounters with strange creatures who long time ago dwelled in these areas alongside with native people.Memories of fairies, elves and small people malicsicsi were alived near the fireplaces. In ancient times, when years were not counted yet, those strange beings could be encountered in the town, but also on pastures outside of it,where shepherds dwelled.those encounters were especially unpleasant if they took place at night.
Mali Rocs (one of the oldest parts of Vrbnik) had major trouble with malicsicsi. Those small playful beings, wearing red caps, appeared suddenly and then annoyed, bothered and teased people who did not find that very amusing.Inhabitants of Rocs often remembered one particular malicsics and his misdeeds. So,he cosily settled himself in the attic in one small house in Rocs (You will surely pass by it if You go to Rocs!).He demanded that plat of makaruni (type of home made pasta) is to be prepared for him every day, meaning that he had to be fed not to bother the neighbourhood. And not to be fed with just anything, because makaruni were a dish prepared on Sundays and holydays only!

    PLAGUE'S HOUSE
  • Tip Rating:
  • PLAGUE'S HOUSE

There is a house in Smokovec (another very old part of Vrbnik) called "Plague's house".Long time ago,a poor woman named Jela lived in it with her only son.One evening,as she was coming home, she met Plague which could not get to pass the Cross in the entrance to Vrbnik.Plague promised Jela that if she carried It in the town,It will spare her house. It also treathened that if she refused,It will find someone else to carry It in anyway,so jela agreed to save her only child. However, that night the little boy was at neighbours',not to be alone at home. Plague visited every house in Vrbnik that night except for Jela's,as It promised. When poor mother came home, she called for her son and when she realised he was not at home she broke down and bitterly wept.People said that if one peeped through the window, there stil can be seen the outlines of poor Jela, weeping and calling for her child.
Mate Grskovic (1835.-1916.) from Vrbnik who, while studying in Prague, shared a room with a great Croatian writer to be,August Senoa (1838.-1881.),told him this beautiful legend.Senoa described it in his famous poem "Plague's House".

In 1855. this region was struck by cholera. So the people have taken a vow to Holy Mary and built this church in dedication to her, to protect them against this terrible disease.
