Ćevapi Heaven

by polardabar

The country of Croatia has taken part in the 54th International Exhibition of Innovations, Research & New Technologies in Brussels with 31 invention. The most important invention [and I'm sure all the TSC members will agree] is the revolutionary tchevuppy-making machine! It's a revolution in the production of ćevapi, since it enables forming ćevapi in five rows at the same time, so that more than 200 kg of meat can be processed in an hour! Klaudijo Šturman from Rovinj, who invented the heavenly machine, is hoping for a success in all south European countries, where ćevapi are one of the main meat delicacies... Even in Istria [where fish & mushroom is the main dish] have a culture of making ćevapi. So we can only hope that it does spread around Europe [and wider]... ;)

Hrvatski - the language in Croatia

by polardabar

The official language in Croatia is Croatian & it belongs to the southern Slavic group of Indo-European languages. It is written in the Latin script & it has some specific sounds & letters, e.g. č, ć, đ, ž & š. People ususally say it reminds them of Russian with all those shushy sounds, but it's not that similar. It is extremely rich [morphology, lexic, swearwords aso.], but it is said to be extremely hard to learn [according to a pole even one of the hardest languages in the world to learn!],. Of course, I can't be the judge of that, but sometimes it's just impossible to explain people why a specific work should be in a specific form. There are some courses & books, but without someone to help you out, I suppose it'd be quite hard to learn it. If you want to know something more though, visit this page or ask me - I'll try to help you out [at least with the most...

Weddings

by smcamp

If you ever see/hear a big line of cars driving through town, horns blaring, and all decorated, you have just witnessed a wedding procession pass by. The car with the most flowers is the bride and groom. This is led by a car waving the flag of the Republic of Croatia. This is something that you'll hear almost every weekend, most of the summer in the cities.

Going out for drinks...

by smcamp

If someone invites you out for a drink, its usually assumed that they are paying for it. The same if you invite someone else out, it means that you are paying for it. The idea is that it will all work out in the end, esp. if you are friends.

0.00 ‰ - Viva Croatia! ;o)

by polardabar

By the new law of the Republic of Croatia, the official alcohol level in the blood has come down to 0.00 ‰! The law does tolerate a tiny percentage of 0.1 ‰ though, 'coz it is easily mistakable. That doesn't help much, I know, but if you drink anything, you really shouldn't drive! One glass of wine, beer or simply two fresh peaches can cost you your license for three months! There were numerous & serious debates about that here in Croatia & people finally understood that it doesn't make much sense. When you compare this law to Ireland's or Czech, it's hilarious. It's still valid, but the government says they'll return the limit to 0,5 ‰. Nobody knows when, but be careful in any case...

Many settlements have been founded already in pre-Roman times by the Greeks and Illyrian tribes. As for the Roman times, the most important settlements were Salonae (Solin), Issa (Vis), and Pula. This, on the picture, are remains of an huge Roman villa at archipelago of Brijuni.

FJAKA - Local Mediation Technique

by KristaB

Croatians living in coastal area, especially Dalmatians, are generally described as joyous people who love singing but waste their energy carefully. This specific state of low energy consumption which occurs mostly during hot summer afternoons is called FJAKA.People tend to sit or lay in shade, speak in lower voice or rather - have a nap.I think this Fjaka thing is one of main sources of Dalmatian wit and wisdom. In the area where tourists tend to ignore this healthy highly spiritual practice, locals adapt and sit in shade and observe the tourists running, snapping pictures and doing all other touristy things.

Corals - No , Thank You!

by KristaB

Island Zlarin was and in a way still is known for it's tradition of gathering and processing corals. Brave men from Zlarin were diving all over the Mediterranean sea looking for corals, and local craftsmen were famous for their skill of producing high quality decorative items. An amusing anecdote: the whole willage would gather to say good bye to brave seamen and divers upon their departure, and one woman had to pee on their boat to ensure good luck. I was very sad to learn at local museum that the corals in the Adriatic are almost extinct due to uncontrolled gathering that went on for hundreds of years. So the man on the picture which I took at local museum is actually polishing imported corals, but using traditional methods. Even though having a coral necklace might feel good, I realized I would just encourage further devastation, although in another continent, but still not something I...
