Must Hear: Yammat

by diocletianvs

Although they are only four years old Yammat are already rather popular band on local Zagreb radio stations and usually considered as the only band capable of "filling the gap" that was left after the Jinx stopped playing. Their first album "Plan B" is advertised as "collection for relaxing, travel and other metally active activities" so each VT-er should give them a try. They already received the "Black Cat Award" for the best Music Potential and some of their videos also received prizes for video filmography. You can listen to most of the songs from their album if you visit their website (click on Plan B).

Must Hear: JINX

by diocletianvs

"One has to stop when it's the best" was one of the JINX's best songs and unfortunately they stopped their career as a band some time ago when the lead singer decided to get married and get a family which was also the time when their carrer was at its peak. Certainly one of the best bands that appeared on Croatian music scene in the 1990s, JINX are often told to have returned the pride to Croatian urban pop music. They were small but extremely succesful workshop that created hit after hit and soon became a category for themselves. If possible, don't leave Croatia without their "Retro / The best of Jinx" album that features the best songs by the band including the DVD with some of the best videos the group created for their songs. Fresh & Urban - the sound of JINX.

What?

by diocletianvs

Various rulers and cultural influences have left many traces on the language used in Croatia. Although everyone says it speaks Croatian, sometimes people from the South (strong Italian influence) have problems communicating with people from the North (strong German influence). When I arrived to study in Zagreb from Split, I had to learn many new words. When my professor was referring to "stenge" (stairs in Zagreb dialect) I thought he was talking about columns. When my friend from Split said in Zagreb that her "gace" (meaning trousers) were dirty (from the snow), a friend from Zagreb was shocked - in Zagreb "gace" means only underpants. When my landlord was calling her cat to "come over" ("odi simo") it took me almost half a year until I realized that "simo" means "over here" - during that time I thought cat's name was Simo. There are three main dialects in Croatia, named after the word...

Must Hear: Maksim Mrvica

by diocletianvs

It was only after he won four Porins (Croatian Grammies) that he became internationally famous - Sibenik born pianist Maksim Mrvica tries to attract young audiences to classical music by performing some of the classical pieces in a fresh way. He was born in 1975, began piano lessons at 9 (giving his first public performance at the same age) and performed Haydn's C major piano concerto with an orchestra just 3 years later. War broke out in 1990, but both Maksim and his professor Marija Sekso were determined that he should continue his musical studies. "There were a thousand grenades a day in my town," he says, "but you can't just stop living - you must go on. And the only thing I could find to help me was my piano." After five years at the Music Academy in Zagreb, Maksim spent a year at the Ferenc Liszt Conservatoire in Budapest. During this period (1999) he won first prize in the Nicolai...

Must Hear: Josipa Lisac

by diocletianvs

Controversial. Authentic. Avanguard. Original. Extravagant. Those are all the words that are inevitable in all texts about Josipa Lisac. She started her music career in 1973 and in the last 30 years has been the most original Croatian artist - always fresh, unique and powerful. She never cared for stereotypes and cliches, her songs are full of emotions and her performances always guarantee the unusual visual effect. The First Lady of Croatian Music - Josipa Lisac continues to surprise with her unique voice and extravagant style. If you manage to find them, I suggest her albums Boginja from 1987 and Zivot from 2000 as well as The best of Josipa Lisac from 1998 or an 8-CD collection of her songs released in 1997 under the name Antologija .

Look for Street Signs in Dubrovnik

by chaYangshu

All the street lamps are similar size & type in the old town of Dubrovnik. Also every shopkeeper, restaurant etc. put their signs on the lamps. So if your tooth aches in Stari Grad, all you have to do is to look on lamps!!I think they are cute!

Special characters

by diocletianvs

Croatian alphabet doesn't have letters Q, W, X and Y; but it has eight extra letters with funny marks on them that have the only function to confuse travellers that are trying to read local language. They are (from left to right on the photo - VT won't display them properly as text): like ch in checklike tu in futurelike j in jeep (softer)like j jump (harder)like lli in millionlike ny in canyonlike sh in rushlike s in pleasureAs you can notice, there are also three letters that are written as combination of two other letters. So, towns of Sinj and Senj have only three letters - useful if you're struggling with crosswords...Croatian is easily pronounced because a letter always has the same pronounciation no matter where it may occur. Every word is pronounced exactly as it is spelt. Once you learn how to pronounce each letter, no great efforts will be required to pronounce and read...

Newly Appointed Cardinal

by tylercdurden2004

This is a picture of one of the newly appointed candinals of the roman catholic church Josip Bozanic from Zagreb. I was on the island at the time when he pulled up in a ferry with his entourage. The whole island seemed to be there and it was quite a big event. I was very happy with this picture as I caught him with his head bowed and eyes closed, like he was praying as he walked. It was so interesting to see peoples reaction on such a small island and how much they adored him. Religion is very important to Croatians especially in the more rural areas.

Croatian Wedding

by tylercdurden2004

This was a great little bonus to my time on Hvar. Its a picture of a Croatian wedding and let me say that its quite a boisterous event. The people came out of the chapel singing and dancing and waving the flag or The Republic of Hrvatska (Croatia). There were accordian players and lots of people singing and dancing as hard as they could. Its definietly worth while if you see one to get a closer look. Its great to see how people in different cultures celebrate major life events.

Sneaking around Trogir

by ChrisAlexander

Getting lost is the best way to discover a new place. And following the locals can help. I soon found myself in Trogir's residential back streets and was startled on my way by the sounds of a heated domestic argument from the open window of one of the houses. There was shouting soon followed by the sound of a woman sobbing, and, much to my shame , I stopped to listen along with a bored looking young girl leaning on the window ledge of a neighbouring building. The look on her face seemed to be saying, "They're at it again." (Sorry, no picture.)
