Marmelada od Sipak

by lichinga

Rose Hip Jam is a great product I only found in Croatia. It should exist somewhere else in the area (Slovenia, Hungary, Bulgaria...) but it seems Croatians are the ones who really love it most! I love it, too! Dark red, creamy, sweet with a sour background, very rich in vitamin C (welll, jam is not really the place where one should be looking for vitamin, after all that heating they passed through....). BTW: one of my latest jar has been personally delivered by a great VT-er from Ljubljana... guess who?

Local currency

by diocletianvs

One of the questions that amuses me the most on Vt forums is "I'm travelling to this non-euro, non-dollar destination. Can I still use Euros? Or Dollars?"Of course you can! In the first bank (banka) or exchange office (mjenjaènica) you see after you arrive!Official currency of Croatia is kuna. That means literally what it says: in all official places, you can pay only in kunas. The thing that confuses travellers the most is the fact that many prices, especially tourism-related, are in euros. There are two reasons for this: the first being the fact that in late 1980s and early 1990s there was big inflation and companies were insuring themselves by listing prices in hard currency (usually Deutschmarks at that time). The reason why prices are still listed in Euros is to make it easier for tourists to calculate prices. That said, you'll be able to use your Euros only in unofficial places,...

qwertY? No: qwertZ!

by diocletianvs

If you use some internet caffe in Croatia, you'll notice all special Croatian characters on the right side of the keyboard. One thing that will surely confuse you is the fact that letters Z and Y are usually switched, compared to English keyboards - in Croatia first keys are qwertZ and not qwertY. Other keys are on their usual places, but zou'll probablz notice all words with Z or Y. Frequently asked question is usually "Where the f*** is "@" sign? Well, you'll usually get it by combining Right Alt key (Alt Gr) and " v " key :-))Most Internet caffes use English versions of software, but it's not uncommon to find the local versions as well. In that case Word will look like on this picture. Hope you'll manage :-))

An ancient instrument.of defiance...this photograph is 'nicked' from the Zagreb Museum of Ethnography website and it actually dates from 1950 and it originates from Knin. More about Balkan music, follow the link below:Read this wonderful article(in English) on Balkan ethnomusicology; it is not just about the Croats, it defines the cultural essence of the Balkans, and it's soul expressed through music.http://research.umbc.edu/eol/MA/index/number6/caleta/jos_0.htm We are not just the flipping crazy inhabitants where we kill each other since the time begun..it is a melting pot of various civilisations, East and West and it has immense historical, intellectual and artistic legacy......and it is a curse to be born over here, because the land is stained with blood and national feuds of Talkienesque proportions.. Also, read Ivo Andric's Nobel Prize book(1962), The Bridge on River Drina...the...

Visovac island is a particular...

by Tenen

Visovac island is a particular jewel of the national park Krka. A green park in a blue lake, just over 1 hectare of area, with a a Franciscan church and monastery whose beginnings go back to the fourteenth century. It was built by desert ascetics (order of St. Augustine). Later on, the island is inhabited by Bosnian Fransciscans taking refuge from the Ottomans. The monastery has loads of valuable books, including 620 Turkish documents. The pirates and the legendary gerilla warriors "uskoci" sometimes sailed around here, and then back to the Adriatic.( during the Middle Ages). The scenery is awesome, shame about the vegetation, most of the Dalmatian trees were relentlessly cut by stupid Venetians.

Old wounds make deep scars

by american_tourister

Croatia was allied with the Germans in WWII. An SS Division was recruited of Croatian and Bosnian volunteers. The idea was to send it to Russia. When it fell apart in battle the German Army sent them back to fight the Partisans in Yugoslavia. This was not forgotten and was one of the thousands of reasons for the terrible civil wars that erupted here in the 1990's.

Kroatien im Kürze

by Rhoenbaeuml

Toilet tip

by matcrazy1

.There are not many public toilets in Croatia even in touristy places. If you find one, expect to having to pay a small fee. So, always carry some small change on you. You can always find public toilets in the train stations, in bus and petrol stations, in bigger supermarkets. An easy solution to find a place to go when nature calls is to look for the nearest hotel or fast- food restaurants (a rule which you can apply in all the cities all over the world)..

Blood alcohol experiments

by matcrazy1

.The most popular Croatian beer is probably Karlovacko Pivo. Classic pilsener - golden, high carbonation, big head. Spicy-smoky aroma. Sweet, fairly metallic. Some maltiness in the middle surrenders to a metallic drying bitterness later.Another one is Zagreb's Ozujsko pivo.Better do not try to disturb people who taste delicious beer, rather join them :-)..
