Thier language

by Venturingnow

The language the Croats speak is pretty easy to learn, at least the basics are. It's nice to be able to speak in their terms when you aren't in a big city, are trying to hitchhike, etc. Just get a guidebook or language dictionary a week or two before you go and you'll be pretty fluent, I was.

Language Fluency

by bermanv

Most Croatians speak German or Italian. Most young people are fluent enough in English, especially girls, who even seem to enjoy it (or maybe it's just me?:)). You can try Russian, but it doesn't always work; the numbers are pronounced almost the same as in Russian. I was able to understand about 70%-80% from the written text as Russian speaker. It would be a good idea to learn a few basic words in Croatian as a courtesy - as everywhere else, people appreciate that.

The Croatian Language Vladimir Nazor (1876 - 1949)I spent all my life within you,Ancient and beautiful language of the Croats;Born on the doorstep of your sea, with my dedication I slowly conquered you.You also took me where I had never been.To the mountain’s peak, to the pier’s end,And in the small cottage, and in the house of goldAnd everywhere I could hear your murmuring voice. I wanted to be a musical instrument on whichthe swarms of words in your speechsound like resonant strings and have floral scent. So that standing up over my cradle and my grave,I may breath in you and live with you,Even when I cease to be.[My translation from the original Croatian text is loosely based on Antun Nizeteo’s and Marvin Tatum’s translation] About the LanguagePetar Preradovic (1818 - 1872)About the language, my kin . . .PreradovicAbout it, yes! by pegi1

EUGEN BUKTENICA He was born in Grohote in 1914. He aroused wide interests in Croatia and also abroad. His paintings are naïve paintings. His main interests are a motif and a story. He wants to show a part of his native place, of the island, of the village. The motifs are domestic animals, houses, boats, villagers… the paintings of Buktenica draw your attention with their spontaneity, his observance and imagination. He is the painter but also a chronicler of his village, of his island and of his people.

Belonging to the...

by ana.gsm

Belonging to the Middle-European and Mediterranean cultural and civilization circle and tradition. Extremely rich and valuable cultural and historical heritage is pointing to a millennium old presence of Croatia in the area. On this photo you can see Baska Stone Tablet from island of Krk (northern part of Croatian coast), which is written in old CROATIAN ALPHABET-GLAGOLJICA, and it is talking about Croatian king Zvonimir and how church of St.Lucia was built. Importance of the Tablet, which was written in 1100. -although it’s not the oldest Croatian glagolitic monument- is in quantity of saved text and historical facts, together with graphical and lingual facts that are found there.... Beside this, the specific urban culture of coastal and island areas is easily seen in towns such as: Porec, Rovinj, Pula, Zadar, Sibenik, Hvar, Korcula and Ston, with Split (Diocletian's Palace) and...

more about Glagolitic history...

by ana.gsm

more about Glagolitic history in Croatia(written by Mateo Žagar, Ph.D.)The Croatian Glagolitic tradition is certainly the most distinctive segment of Croatian cultural history. While all the other Slavic peoples completely abandoned the Glagolitic script by the 12th century at latest, the Croats carried this tradition all the way through to the 19th, and even 20th century respectively, but of course, not on the same level during each and every period. Moreover, the cultural and scientific community of Europe had as early as the 14th century and up to the establishment of Slavic studies at the end of the 18th century been familiarized with the Glagolitic script most frequently through the mediation of the Croatian tradition (compare Juraj [George] of Slavonia, the Czech Glagolitic episode, G. Postello?), wherein the references most frequently made during consideration of its origin were...

by Tenen

See the lovely Serbian Orthodox churches built in Byzantine style. This one is located in Ocestovo. Wonder at exquisite bell-towers that boldly penetrate the sky and hear melodic chimes produces by giant cast- iron bells. Orthodox chruches usually have interior adorned with ceremonial flags, delicately painted icons and frescoes of the apostles and Jesus. If you get a chance to attend a liturgy, you will smell peculiar aroma of the incense called - ‘tamjan’, made from special type of pine resin. It gives a liturgy an air of holiness. Cemeteries are clustered with elegant crypts, monumental headstones engraved with pictures, names and epitaphs in the Cyrillic alphabet.
