In the center of Silba, the most noticeable structure is Marinic tower, later named Toreta.
Young naval captain Petar Marinic promised to his fiancée Antonija that once he returns from his next journey, he will marry her and build a tower for her, so that she can observe the horizon while waiting for him to return from his overseas journeys.
But his journey was much longer that he expected. Young woman, under pressure from her family, aware that her options are more than limited, lost her hope and married another man. On this small island one can not count on meeting someone ... they all know each other since birth.
When captain Petar Marinic finally returned, there was a crowd of children welcoming his boat. Nothing much ever happens on such small island, the appearance of the boat is a major event! One little girl with dark eyes caught his attention, he lifted her up and gently touched her cheek.
Soon he learned that she is the daughter of his fiancée and his best friend.
"If my beloved wasn’t willing to wait for me, I will wait for this girl to grow up and become my wife, if she agrees to."
And so he waited for 20 years, sailed the seas and kept on hoping that this girl will agree to marry him.
She did.
He built the tower he had promised, but her mother never set foot into the garden of his house. The captain and his young bride enjoyed many years of happiness, watching together their island, ships and the sea from the top of their Tower Of Love.
