Vila Kaliopa is located in a romantic Reneissance garden in Vis. The ambience cannot be surpassed, as the tables are positioned individually in intimate palm tree coves, so that you don't even see other diners from where you are sitting. It is one of the most beautiful dining surroundings I know of, but - as with most things in Croatia these days - the overall attitude is one of "rip you off and see you off". We were waited by 5 different persons, all of them untrained. The first girl who escorted us to our table didn't have a clue about the menu. The second person, who brought the aperitif, didn't have a clue about fish. The fish person brought the fish, obviously not fresh, but still a good selection (a John Dory, a large sea bass, dragon fish). We selected a fish, however we were eventually served a completely different one! The is no wine menu, and the only red wine they offer (Sv. Jurij) is the worst on the island by all standards. If you'd like meat instead of fish, go get a pizza, because Kaliopa offers only sorry-looking dry steaks that must have been frozen and unfrozen 10 times before serving. And for dessert: tiramisu, however without maskarpone, coffee, cream or any of the usual ingredients...
Favorite Dish: They have really good local fennel grappa "koromačica", slightly sweet and delicious.

Until I took the 2 hour boat to Vis that is. I've never been much for big boats on the sea, but that's probably just because I had a slightly scary experience on one as a 6 year old, and then again...

Like most American's, I have an interest about where my family is from. As long as I can remember, my grandmother, or Nona, has told stories about "The O Kuntree." It wasn't until I was about 9 or 10...
