  • On a whole you will never be deceived by Croat restaurants. They will range from medium to good but, unless you have a good tip, you will seldom find a great variety of dishes, at least on coastal towns.

All restaurants will serve salads, grilled meat (very good and tasty) : raznici, cevapcici, plejskavica, etc… But you will be very lucky if you find "punjene paprika" (stuffed pepper), "sarma" (stuffed cabbage) or even "musaka",
Sea food is usually very good and fresh but fish and shellfish are expensive. Squid (lignje) are not too expensive and you will not be disappointed with grilled squid.
If you see a porklet roasting on a skewer, you should stop and taste. It's one of the tastiest meal you will encounter !
Don't miss the ham (prsut), its is excellent, in Dalmacia as well as in Istria.

Konoba Mediterano: Great Meat Dishes in Dubrovnik
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The manager of our guesthouse, Toni, had given us two advises on where to eat in Dubrovnik and one advise where not to eat.

We chose this place for a little VT dinner because it looked nice, with a nice outdoor seating on the square underneath the steps Uz jezuite. Plus there wasn't anybody trying to sell us anything, on the contrary, you could have a look inside the menu without anybody looking at you. And because the owner is a friend of Toni's, we knew he wouldn't mess it up! Plus the other place Toni had recommended, the popular Lokanda, had too much fish on the menu for our tastes.

It was a good decision. The food we got here was among the best we got on our whole trip, something I wouldn't have expected to happen in Dubrovnik! Prices are as high as they are in Dubrovnik, but here you can be sure to get a good meal!

The day we visited it was rather busy here with lots of tables being full. The poor owner/waiter/Mr. Bean impersonator was running around quite a lot. He still was very friendly.

I had marinated grilled turkey breast which was very good. Thomas had Turkey breast with Prsut and Mince sauce. I think it would be the only dish in Croatia he would leave Boban's "Gnocchi Mare e Monti" Fanclub for ;)

I am not telling you what Maxine had... I would immediately start laughing again (Hello dear Maxine, are you still hungry?)

  • In Zagreb in particular, the food seems a little more Central European in influence. There are heavy dishes such as this Zagreb Steak (fried steak) and rich pastries such as Kremsnita, which is a delicious, custard-based treat that can be found at any slasticarnica (pastry shop).

I had read about the sandwiches of Buffet Skola on Krista's Dubrovnik page here on VT. She had written so nicely about a ham and cheese sandwich, we simply had to try ;)

And right she was! We went to this tiny place in one of the side streets of Stradun (left handside coming from Pile Gate), sat outside in the shade and ordered a sandwich with olive oil cured cheese and Dalmatian smoked ham (Prsut). It was gorgeous! The perfect start for a wonderful day in Dubrovnik...

There are only a few sandwiches on the menu (Oil cured cheese, Ham, Ham and Cheese). I can really recommend the mixed sandwich with Prsut and Cheese. It's so lovely! The price: 17 kn as far as I remember.

Arsenal is an incredibly cool looking joint with red walls and two half finished boat window seats (if that makes any sense?). The theme of the place is basically a very trendy shipyard (arsenal).

The restaurant is located on the Marina in the old town and was maybe the site of a shipyard before. It is attatched to a trendy looking cafe just off of the main road (basically on the other side to the marina).

It looks very expensive, especially as it has live music, but it isn't. The portions are gigantic too.

The menu is in Croatian but the waiters speak English are are always happy to help you! I was very impressed with the service.

It seemed to be a very popular restaurant; we got the last table! Strangely enough there seemed to be more locals than tourists there even though it looks like a place that would attract tourists!

The dinner music was half popular English songs and half popular Croat songs. I generally preferred the Croat songs except when the sung 'The boxer' because the singer sounded like the Croat version of Paul Simon.

We got the meat platter for two but it could easily feed 5. It only cost 50 kuna

We also ordered the house red wine for 105 kuna which was fantastic. It's called Plavac Milicic (milichitch) and i's from Croatia.. It's was light and didn't have a strong after taste

    Boban: Great Pasta in Zagreb
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Boban is a basement restaurant near the main square of Zagreb. We've been here twice on our winter visit to Zagreb because we really enjoyed the food here. In summer we immediately went back and forced the local VTers to have our VT dinner here!

They serve Italian food here, mainly meat and pasta. If you are looking for pizza this is not your place, there's no pizza on the menu. The pasta, however, is gorgeous - very big portions, very fancy combinations and very delicious. Prices are very reasonable and the English speaking staff is friendly. I'm already looking forward to coming back here on my next visit to Zagreb.

Upstairs from the restaurant there's a nice bar which is called Boban, too.

My favourite dish in 2005 and 2007 was Penne Mamma Rosa (yes, I am boring ;). Thomas enjoyed his Gnocchi Mari e Monti so much, he ordered the same dish three times already. The Crostino I had for starters was gorgeous as well.

    All: Various Influences
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Croatia has a cuisine heavily influenced by its neighbours. There are great dishes originating from Turkey, as well as the all too popular Italian.

In general it seems that nearly all restaurants have basically the same menu. You've basically a choice of pizza, pasta, seafood varieties, and a number of the more 'local' ones such as Chevapi (excuse my spelling). I pretty much survived on the latter which consists of meat dumplings usually served with fries and salad. Very good to with a local Pivo (beer) such as Karlovacko. The seafood in Croatia is also excellent apparently (however I am no seafood fan - thus have no opinion).

Restoran Fontana: Great Grill Chicken in Trogir

One evening we came to Trogir for dinner. We didn't feel like walking too much and we wanted to catch some last atmosphere before moving on so we trusted my travel guide. The only restaurant it mentioned for Trogir was "Restoran Fontana" on Riva. That night we didn't care for prices or touristy places, we just wanted food and a great place to sit. It was such a nice evening with great food, the usual Martini and Coke and with a cat who ran up the palm tree when being chased by a dog... lovely!

I had grilled chicken with chips and a green salad. Both were very tasty and my whole plate was full of meat ;) The price was 45 kn, so not extremely expensive and absolutely worth it. Thomas had 2 grilled mackerels for about the same price, his plate was full of fishes ;)

Konoba Dundo Maroje: The best restaurant I tried in Dubrovnik
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It is a fantastic/ romantic little restaurant just off of the main road to the left, if you are coming from Pile gate (although it is at the opposite end to the gate. In fact it is the second from last street).

Again this restaurant sells a mix of Spaghetti and seafood and calls it traditional Dalmatian cooking. Of course, I'm not saying that isn't true I just think it's funny how influenced it is by Italy on the cuisine front!!

As I said in the title this restaurant was by far the best I tried in Dubrovnik. The food was simply delightful and well presented. If I ever go back to Dubrovnik I'll certainly come back here.

I ordered the Octopus Salad to start and which I loved and then Spaghetti with sea food for seconds which was very tasty.

    Nokturno: Cheap Pizza in Zagreb
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Nobody visited Zagreb before and not had at least one meal in Nokturno I think. We had two on our last visit, and had had several before on other Zagreb visits. The food is great here (not everything I had was perfect but most of it), and the prices are incredibly cheap. The most expensive pizza costs 30kn. We paid around 100 kn for a huge meal and several drinks for two.

In summer you can sit outside on a funny terrace construction (if you are lucky! it's really always busy here!)

In winter I loved the white wine and chicken risotto. In summer I felt more like pizza and I think the pizza with Prsut was the best of them. All washed down with a Martini Bianco with food.
