Old Croatian lady selling pies by tashka Croatian cuisine is not very complex. It includes fried fish (mostly mackerel), seafood (mostly octopus) and vegetables. Octopus salad (boiled octopus with tomatoes and onions) is served in most restaurants. In some touristic places you can see old ladies selling pies with jam, berries, meat or cheese. The pies are very tasty and quite cheap, they make a good snack, so if you see them, try them.
I liked the octopus salad and the pies. Fried mackerel tasted strange... It's OK, but not for me. Leave a Comment

This restaurant really looks lovely, it is located at a small square in front of a museum in Hvar, close to the harbour. People queue there in the evening to get a table. I do not know if they had a bad day, when I went there - but I unfortunately have to say that I haven`t eaten so bad in a restaurant for a long time! My starter was a fish carpaccio. A fish carpaccio in my understanding are thin slices of raw fish, preferably sword fish. At Bistrot Marinero you get marinated sardines instead, decorated with salad leaves, mainly Rucola. Obviously the farmer who delivered the Rucola had a snail plague, as the salad leaves were full of holes. Or maybe it was organic food, i don`t know :). The taste wasn`t too bad though. The worst thing was my main dish. I had ordered Spaghetti with scampi. It looked quite good at firts sight actually. But then I tried the spaghetti and had the first scampi tentacle in my mouth. They obviously prepared the dish carelessly, so there were loads of loose tentacles and scampi heads between the spaghetti, which tasted like pure flour. It was pretty disgusting. The scampi itself were of a good quality though. The tomato salad had no taste, no wonder, they obviously had put the tomatoes in the fridge. The salad was ice cold. Best thing were the calamari. A variety of regional beers. by Canuck5 While I was in the country for 6 months, I had a chance to try a number of different local beers. I kept some of their labels as souvenirs. Not all of them were made in Croatia; some were made elsewhere within the former Yugoslavia. The alcohol content of these beers ranged from 11% to 12.5%. Leave a Comment

EMPTY SEATS MOST EVERYWHERE by slawekjb IF FRUTTI DI MARE IS YOUR THING YOU DON'T WANNA GO TO CROATIA (OR PREPARE YOURSELF TO SPEND HUGE SUMS OF MONEY FOR A SMALL SAMPLE OF WHAT SHOULD BE SEE FOOD...) CROATIANS DON'T SEEM TO EAT OUT MUCH AND RESTAURANTS CATER MOSTLY TO UNSUSPECTING TOURISTS (OR FOOLS) WHO ARE EXPECTED TO PAY PREMIUM FOR VERY LITTLE IN RETURN. IF YOU DRINK BEER DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON ANY OTHER BRAND THAN OJUSKO (UNLESS YOU LIKE CORONA). IF YOU ENJOY EXTRMELY DRY WINE YOU ARE IN LUCK - OTHERS ARE NOT.
GREAT ICE CREAMS EVERYWHERE. LOCAL "CAVAPCICI" IS GOOD - SOMETHING I CALL THE "CROATIAN BURGER" ($ 5.00) BELOW YOU SEE THE PRICE FOR AN AVERAGE MEAL. ONE FOOTNOTE: PRICES FOR FOOD SEEM TO BE ALMOST IDENTICAL REGARDLESS OF THE STANDARD OF A PLACE. CURIOUS THING. IT WILL BE SOMETHING OF A RARE THING TO FIND A PLACE WITH GREAT FOOD/PRICES -ALL OVER CROATIA. THERE ARE SOME-FEW EXEPTIONS TO WHAT I'VE WRITTEN ABOVE. Leave a Comment Theme: PizzaPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: GREAT MAJORITY OF PLACESDirections: YOUR BEST BET FOR BOOZE AND FOOD IS TO GO TO A GROCERY STORE AND BUY IT THERE FOR A FRACTION OF WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO PAY AT ANY ESTABLISHMENT.

Croatian wines by canaglic What to drink? Cultivation of wine grapes and production of sweet and selected wines is the several centuries old tradition of Croatian winegrowers - both, in the continental part of Croatia, and at Primorje and Dalmatia. The well-known varieties of Croatian wines along the Adriatic coast and on the islands are red wines - Teran, Merlot, Cabernet, Opolo, Plavac, Dingac, Postup, and white wines - Malvazija, Posip, Pinot, Kujundzusa, Zlahtina, Muskat... In the continental parts - Riesling, Graševina, Burgundac, Traminac... Among the strong drinks, there are various brandies which are well-known - plum brandy, herb-flavoured brandy, grapes brandy, and among the dessert drinks are Prosek and Maraschino. DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR CAR by matcrazy1 . Croatian wines (and beer) are addicted. But certainly please never, never try to drive under influence. It's a criminal offence - you may be banned of driving + pay much not mention that it's dangerous for you and others. So, better NOT to follow the inscription from the picture, take a taxi instead. . Volosko at the background by SirRichard I came to this restaurant by chance. I had visited Opatija in the morning, on a daytrip from Rijeka. On my way back I decided to do the first part of the way walking along the coast from Opatija. So just after Volosko I came accross to this restaurant and it was time for lunch so I stopped here. It happened to be a nice seafood restaurant with a pleasant terrace, a little overpriced for local standards, but I was on the mood for an "hommage", so I ordered a splendid grilled fish and a risotto, with a bottle (I finished it!) of croatian white wine.
