Amfora Restaurant, Volosko

by SirRichard

I came to this restaurant by chance. I had visited Opatija in the morning, on a daytrip from Rijeka. On my way back I decided to do the first part of the way walking along the coast from Opatija. So just after Volosko I came accross to this restaurant and it was time for lunch so I stopped here. It happened to be a nice seafood restaurant with a pleasant terrace, a little overpriced for local standards, but I was on the mood for an "hommage", so I ordered a splendid grilled fish and a risotto, with a bottle (I finished it!) of croatian white wine.

Eating in ferries

by SirRichard

Eating in ferries uses to be rather expensive if you are in a budget. As ferry trips may take 1-2 days, I always buy the essentials in the departure harbour (water, bred, sliced cheese, fruit, some chocolate...) and then maybe get some coffee or ocassional sandwich at the boat.

Diocletianus Terrace in Split

by SirRichard

This was a real discovery in Split. On the bus coming here a fellow traveller adviced me not to miss it when in Split and I really thank her this tip. Inside the Diocletianus palace, where all the tourist restaurants are, this place is a HIDDEN JEWEL. It is a very simple restaurant, that offers just 2-3 dishes at a very reasonable price, at a lovely terrace where with views (throuh the roman archs) to the harbour. An oasis of peace in the very heart of Split.Go early if you wanna seat at the terrace, there is only 5-6 tables. Cheese apetizers, Cevapcici, french fries and a HUGE beer,

Vinodol Restaurant, Zagreb

by SirRichard

When I arrived to Zagreb I wanted to taste something typically croatian, after having survived on pizzas and fish and similar along the coast. So I headed to the Tourist Info and asked them. They sent me to a nearby restaurant, Vinodol. It has a nice terrace at the entrance alley, but the day was rather cloudy so I chose inside. The restaurant was not full, but there were a wedding table and a group of japanese in other table. It is decorated in brick and wood and not very bright inside, but it was nice. I ordered some "gulash kind" soup and a dish of game, which was excellent.Bread was home made and it came in several varieties.

Johnson Conoba: Fresh Seafood and Malvazija vine!

by apekovic

Conoba Johnson is small, simple mediteranean taverna on the small village Moscenicka Draga near beautiful Opatija (Istra region). Part of this Istrian coast is amazing. Quality and selection of seafood is one of the best (probably the best) I ever tryed. Fresh seashells, variety of fishes and baby squeed are the typical restoran offer. Including the one of the best wine cart in Croatia, inlcuding world famous Istrian Malvazija (especially Malvazija by Kozlovic winery). Seashells - Capesante and Dondole; Baby squeed and seabass.

Hvar: Bistrot Marinero: A desaster!

by coccinella169

This restaurant really looks lovely, it is located at a small square in front of a museum in Hvar, close to the harbour. People queue there in the evening to get a table. I do not know if they had a bad day, when I went there - but I unfortunately have to say that I haven`t eaten so bad in a restaurant for a long time! My starter was a fish carpaccio. A fish carpaccio in my understanding are thin slices of raw fish, preferably sword fish. At Bistrot Marinero you get marinated sardines instead, decorated with salad leaves, mainly Rucola. Obviously the farmer who delivered the Rucola had a snail plague, as the salad leaves were full of holes. Or maybe it was organic food, i don`t know :). The taste wasn`t too bad though. The worst thing was my main dish. I had ordered Spaghetti with scampi. It looked quite good at firts sight actually. But then I tried the spaghetti and had the first...

Hvar: Macondo: The restaurant I liked best in Hvar

by coccinella169

At my dinner at this restaurant just everything was right - the food (pasta with scampi again :), salads, fish frittura, tiramisu), the ambiance and the attentive staff. It is located in one of those narrow Old Town streets. It is lovely decorated in a traditional style and has a fireplace. Prices are a little bit higher than average in Hvar, but it is well worth it! You should reserve in advance, as they just have a few tables outside!

Buffet Skola: Great Sandwiches in Dubrovnik

by sabsi

I had read about the sandwiches of Buffet Skola on Krista's Dubrovnik page here on VT. She had written so nicely about a ham and cheese sandwich, we simply had to try ;)And right she was! We went to this tiny place in one of the side streets of Stradun (left handside coming from Pile Gate), sat outside in the shade and ordered a sandwich with olive oil cured cheese and Dalmatian smoked ham (Prsut). It was gorgeous! The perfect start for a wonderful day in Dubrovnik... There are only a few sandwiches on the menu (Oil cured cheese, Ham, Ham and Cheese). I can really recommend the mixed sandwich with Prsut and Cheese. It's so lovely! The price: 17 kn as far as I remember.

Boban: Great Pasta in Zagreb

by sabsi

Boban is a basement restaurant near the main square of Zagreb. We've been here twice on our winter visit to Zagreb because we really enjoyed the food here. In summer we immediately went back and forced the local VTers to have our VT dinner here! They serve Italian food here, mainly meat and pasta. If you are looking for pizza this is not your place, there's no pizza on the menu. The pasta, however, is gorgeous - very big portions, very fancy combinations and very delicious. Prices are very reasonable and the English speaking staff is friendly. I'm already looking forward to coming back here on my next visit to Zagreb. Upstairs from the restaurant there's a nice bar which is called Boban, too. My favourite dish in 2005 and 2007 was Penne Mamma Rosa (yes, I am boring ;). Thomas enjoyed his Gnocchi Mari e Monti so much, he ordered the same dish three times already. The Crostino I had for...
