Croatian cuisine: Don't Miss The Fresh Seafood!

by frankyboy5

Croatian cuisine is heterogeneous, and is therefore known as "the cuisine of regions". Its modern roots date back to Proto-Slavic and ancient periods and the differences in the selection of foodstuffs and forms of cooking are most notable between those on the mainland and those in coastal regions. Mainland cuisine is more characterized by the earlier Proto-Slavic and the more recent contacts with the more famous gastronomic orders of today - Hungarian, Viennese and Turkish - while the coastal region bears the influences of the Greek, Roman and Illyrian, as well as of the later Mediterranean cuisine - Italian and French. A large body of books bears witness to the high level of gastronomic culture in Croatia, which in European terms dealt with food in the distant past, such as the Gazophylacium by Belostenec, a Latin-Kajkavian dictionary dating from 1740 that preceded a similar French...

Konoba Dundo Maroje: The best restaurant I tried in Dubrovnik

by blint

It is a fantastic/ romantic little restaurant just off of the main road to the left, if you are coming from Pile gate (although it is at the opposite end to the gate. In fact it is the second from last street).Again this restaurant sells a mix of Spaghetti and seafood and calls it traditional Dalmatian cooking. Of course, I'm not saying that isn't true I just think it's funny how influenced it is by Italy on the cuisine front!!As I said in the title this restaurant was by far the best I tried in Dubrovnik. The food was simply delightful and well presented. If I ever go back to Dubrovnik I'll certainly come back here. I ordered the Octopus Salad to start and which I loved and then Spaghetti with sea food for seconds which was very tasty.

???: If only I knew the name, Dubrovnik

by blint

Annoyingly enough I can't remember for the life of me the name of this great little traditional restaurant. I took the business card, but seem to have missed placed it!Anyway, it's located just off the main street to the left if you are walking in from Pile gate. It has a large sign saying Traditional Restaurant and a picture of a chef. It's small with a warm, friendly interior. Decorated similar to a country house. The staff are really friendly and I noticed that there were several newspaper clipping on the wall where the restaurant had been recommended. I ordered a speciality of the restaurant which seemed to be a mix of Italian and Croatian cooking (although it was advertised as traditionally Dalmatian. Basically it was tender beef medallion in a fruity sauce surrounded by gnocchi (my favourite pasta type stuff). To accompany our meal we ordered a bottle of Croatian wine which was...

General Tip on Food in Croatia

by tashka

Croatian cuisine is not very complex. It includes fried fish (mostly mackerel), seafood (mostly octopus) and vegetables. Octopus salad (boiled octopus with tomatoes and onions) is served in most restaurants. In some touristic places you can see old ladies selling pies with jam, berries, meat or cheese. The pies are very tasty and quite cheap, they make a good snack, so if you see them, try them. I liked the octopus salad and the pies. Fried mackerel tasted strange... It's OK, but not for me.

Arsenal: Nothing to do with football, Dubrovnik

by blint

Arsenal is an incredibly cool looking joint with red walls and two half finished boat window seats (if that makes any sense?). The theme of the place is basically a very trendy shipyard (arsenal). The restaurant is located on the Marina in the old town and was maybe the site of a shipyard before. It is attatched to a trendy looking cafe just off of the main road (basically on the other side to the marina). It looks very expensive, especially as it has live music, but it isn't. The portions are gigantic too.The menu is in Croatian but the waiters speak English are are always happy to help you! I was very impressed with the service. It seemed to be a very popular restaurant; we got the last table! Strangely enough there seemed to be more locals than tourists there even though it looks like a place that would attract tourists! The dinner music was half popular English songs and half popular...

Tip Top: Fabulous food, Zagreb

by blint

This restaurant has obviously been reformed since the writer's of Lonely Planet visited it as I found the interior pleasant and modern not from the 60's as the guide book said. Tip Top is a very popular restaurant all day log so you may have to wait for a table. There was never an empty table for longer than one minute. The prices were cheap although we had to wait a long time for the bill maybe because the place was so busy and the waitress kept forgetting to ask for the bill. Our waitress didn't speak English although if I remember correctly the menu is in English too. I found it more fun trying to communicate with someone who couldn't speak English as it meant I really had to practice my Croat! Meat Zagreb Style. Which is cheese and meat wrapped in batter.

Food in Croatia

by Globtrotter

Food in general was unfortunately quite a deciption. Croatia has fresh sea food and it is a pitty that their cuisine (at least for tourists!) isn't more developed. Although prices vary, all restaurants seem to have exactly the same menu :-/I recommend you try their local Peski cheese and black risotto. We also had excellent baby octopuses... marinated, pan fried, etc. Yummy!

Bobon's: He's not just known for football...

by smcamp

In a basement, with an old world feel to it. Vaulted stone-work on the ceilings, soft lighting, and some of the best pastas that I've ever had. The gnocci is deceivingly filling. This place is owned by Zvonimir Boban, the captain of the Croatian National Team.

Pivnica pod Svacem: Really good food for really Cheap

by smcamp

This is some of the best local Croatian food that I had in a restaurant. Service is great, and the prices are GREAT, like 20 kn for bread, soup, and main dish. They have some of the best tasting Cevapcici that I've ever had (though I would have liked a lepinja, but you can't have everything), their Sarma isnt' bad either.

Coffeehouse culture

by Gili_S

I found the Coffeehouse culture amazing, more coffee houses for square metre then anywhere else I know. I guess it is something combined with Wiener culture (coffee) and Mediterranean (weather). However, the distance from Vienna is maybe only few hours by train but light years away with the coffee quality, (Sorry Nik;-) but hey, that was because I ordered the wrong coffee, I learnt I need to order milk coffee and then it was much better.
