by kylamees

My favourite was on the Rab, but You can find this kind of restaurants everywhere on islands near Rijeka and Split. They serve local fish and seafood. They do it naturally good and prices are not expensive at all. Ask for local cheese it's amazingly good but as good cheeses it is not smelling very good :)

Again, the best way to sample the traditional local cuisine is to get friendly with the locals.Try 'kruv ispod peke' or 'pogaca' (baked bread). It has to tickle your taste buds. Spit roasted lamb and pork.

by Tenen

I think it is better to eat at people's houses, because the Dalmatian hospitality is unsurpassed.I highly recommend the very popular 'Prsut', type of smoked ham, similar to Italian 'proscuitto'.Prsut is often eaten with 'Sir iz mjesine'(specially made shepherd cheese), 'kapula'(onions), with glass of locally produced red wine.Healthy, organic food, full of vitamins and minerals.Disadvantages: really bad breath. Make sure you have a mouthwash in your pocket. Other area specialties are: 1.'Tripice'(tripe with onions),2. Pasulj ili Gra(dense bean soup spiced with pork ribs and sausages) 3. 'Kruv ispod peke, 'pogaca'(stove baked peasant (thin, crisp)bread: delicious:-)4.Manjistra (light pasta soup, often with a touch of chicken meat))5. Roast meats(predominantly pork, but you have to try our style spit roast lamb, it is an imperativ:-)All above eaten with raw garlic and onions.

by Snjeska

Croatian cuisine is heterogeneous, and is therefore known as'the cuisine of regions'. Its modern roots date back toProto-Slavic and ancient periods and the differences in theselection of foodstuffs and forms of cooking are most notablebetween those on the mainland and those in coastal regions.Mainland cuisine is more characterized by the earlier Proto-Slavicand the more recent contacts with the more famous gastronomicorders of today - Hungarian, Viennese and Turkish - while thecoastal region bears the influences of the Greek, Roman andIllyrian, as well as of the later Mediterranean cuisine - Italian andFrench.

Goran's Mom's.: Goran's Mom's.

by richiecdisc

Just like Mama used to make takes on new meaning at this very authentic local eatery. You're waited on hand and foot, your protests to help out pretty much ignored or laughingly refused. There were so many great things and always way too much of whatever it was. The stuffed cabbage rolls were especially good as was this chicken.

cant remember the name of the best restaurant, croat names are very tough. I found all the reataurants good because they relied on locally grown produce, herbs and fresh seafood. Someone in our party ask the waiter to get a pack of cigarettes and it took him a long time returing,as it turned out the restaurant was out of cigarettes so he had gotten in his car and gone somewhere else for them. shrimp scampi was served one evening in such huge portions I couldnt believe that 7 of us ate for around 80 dollars this included lots of local wine.

by Kamen_mali

Besides the traditional European cuisine, the Croatian restaurants offer a variety of local dishes. Among the apetizers, there are the Dalmatian smoked ham, the sausages from Istria and Slavonia, salted sardines, the sheep’s chees from Pag and other delicacies. Fish is prepared in different ways and especially tasty are the “brodet” made of sea fish, the fresh-water fish stew and the Neretva brodet made of eels and frogs. Among the meat dishes, there are Dalmatian “pasticada”, the Zagreb veal cutlet, the Zagorje cutlet, breaded veal slices, roasted turkey with “mlinci” (kind of pastry), roasted lamb meat prepared in a special oven etc. In nothern Croatia, the vension is always prepared in a creamy sauce, while in Dalmatia it is prepared in the sauce made of olive oil, viniger, sweet kind of wine, prunes, lemon juice with a touch of rosemary and other aromatic herbs.Favourite food among...
