Besides Zagreb, Osijek is the only city in Croatia that uses trams. Tram network consists of only two lines - the first that connects Visnjevac on the western edge of the city with Zeleno Polje in Donji Grad. The other line is circle line that connects main square with the railway station.
Most trams in Osijek are old Czech-built Tatras with few second-hand Duewags bought from Mannheim. Recently several Tatras were given a big face-lift that included new front and back modules as well as significant changes in the interior.
Tram tickets are available on kiosks and from the drivers. It is possible to use the same ticket and change between trams and buses within the certain period of time, as long as you are going only in one direction.

I never took the bus to Osijek from Zagreb, but that is possible as well, of course.
Bus station is located next to the railway station. The main bus operator is Osijek-based Panturist and, unlike trains, they have direct lines to most bigger cities in Croatia as well as destinations in Vojvodina.

Train station in Osijek is not very busy one. Besides few local trains the only intercity trains are the ones to Zagreb.
Most direct trains take the Drava railroad via Virovitica and Koprivnica. This is a non-electrified railroad and I always find it better and faster to take the trains running on Sava railroad. This usually involves a change in Strizivojna-Vrpolje, but train timetables match well so you never wait more than 5 minutes.
It takes 4,5 - 5 hours on direct trains running on Drava railroad. If you take the Sava railroad travel time is just around 4 hours.
Tilting ICN trains run once per day between Zagreb and Osijek and it takes only 3 hours. Their timetables are oriented towards business travellers from Osijek - they leave early from Osijek and return late afternoon from Zagreb.

I live in Budapest. So first I went to Pécs then took the Pécs-Osijek train.Return ticket is half-price! Last time I went by hitch-hiking.Going there it was more than 1 day.Coming back it took only 4 hours. It depends on fortune!
Local bus companies have comfortable, nice, fast buses. But comparing to Hungarian prices the Croatian ones are much higher!

Trams are one of the charms of Osijek. My friend Nina who lives there, told me there were talks about abolishing trams! It's unthinkable! They add to the atmosphere of the place! I adore trams!
