Osijek Things to Do

  • The co-cathedral

The portal of the co-cathedral is in particularly beautiful and in a way unusual for such a big church. The doorway has one wing only. Richly adorned portal, in neo-Gothic style dominates the whole front facade of the structure.

  • The co-cathedral

The co-cathedral dominates the whole city centre of the town and could be seen from the far distance. It is the tallest building in Osijek and very probably the tallest in the whole region of Slavonija. Imagine the view from its top in particularly if knowing that Slavoija is predominatelly very flat area.

  • The co-cathedral

The co-cathedral of SS Peter and Paul was built in 1898, during period of Austro-Hungarian rule in Slavonija. It was designed by the architect Franz Langenberg who chosed brick and stone for its building. The church look alike very much to the churches in the Northern Germany.cb

Osijek Restaurants

  • Slavonian delights

This restaurant has (re)opened in 2006 and became popular instantly because of its traditional, good food served in a traditionally designed interior for a fraction of the price you would have to pay anywhere in Europe (if they served this kind of food). On Sundays, they serve a "Sunday family lunch" for 45KN per person btw 11:00&16:00h; that's...

  • EL PASO

El Paso is a lovely restaurant on the river Drava quay, on two levels. The upper flor can be too hot in the summer, and in the lower part you can sit by the river ectly and enjoy a bit of fresh breeze. There is a great variety of food, from pizza and pasta to local dishes. What I tasted was delicious, although if you opt for grilled mushrooms...

  • Pub&more

Old Bridge Pub is located in Tvrđa ("citadel"), the historical part of Osijek. It's the newest edition to Osijek's favourite spots as it opened its doors in 2006. It serves a wide range of drinks (lots of beers, just as the pub should), food and music. There are three floors; basement and first floor are packed on weekends, the third floor is...

The most popular spot to go out by night is Tvrđa. There are many bars and cafes, there used to be a disco before too. The light is very special in the evening there. This picture is not from Tvrđa, but from the center of the twon, however, I hope to put an appropriate photo soon...

  • Drava river by night

Take a stroll by the Drava river by night. The river is beautifully enlighted, including the boats that shine floating on the river, very lovely! Still, the most beautiful is the bridge, but if you go too late, the lights on it would be off....

Osijek Transportation

  • Trams

Besides Zagreb, Osijek is the only city in Croatia that uses trams. Tram network consists of only two lines - the first that connects Visnjevac on the western edge of the city with Zeleno Polje in Donji Grad. The other line is circle line that connects main square with the railway station. Most trams in Osijek are old Czech-built Tatras with few...

  • Bus station

I never took the bus to Osijek from Zagreb, but that is possible as well, of course. Bus station is located next to the railway station. The main bus operator is Osijek-based Panturist and, unlike trains, they have direct lines to most bigger cities in Croatia as well as destinations in Vojvodina.

  • Train

Train station in Osijek is not very busy one. Besides few local trains the only intercity trains are the ones to Zagreb. Most direct trains take the Drava railroad via Virovitica and Koprivnica. This is a non-electrified railroad and I always find it better and faster to take the trains running on Sava railroad. This usually involves a change in...

This is a lovely souvenir shop inside the hotel of Bizovačke Toplice. There was a great variety of beautiful souvenirs at affordable prices. It was open also on Sunday, although there was a note "I'll be right back" on the door! :-) I loved the most a beautiful ginger bread heart in lovely packing!

The Catholic church is organizing a painting colony, where paintors from the area are working on their art for a bout a week, and then it is sold for charity, for helping poor people. The event is held in the church area, there is a lovely estate and pleasant surroundings.

Osijek Warnings and Dangers

  • Don't wander in the fields!

There are still mines in the area. As we drove between cities, we passed men in hazard suits, with metal detectors and dogs, clearing a field. An ambulance was parked next to them.

  • The Notorious Bloodthursty Osijek...

A local joke says "If you wave constantly with both your hands around your body you are either crazy or you are from Osijek". Among the numerous animal species that live there the most annoying ones are mosquitoes that see...

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: If you happen to arrive to Osijek late at night or at Sunday when most pharmacies are closed, make sure you have mosquito repellent packed in your bags. If not, head to the first pharmacy. (Most supermarkets will also have something against mosquitos on their shelves with toilletries).

Also, I find the Aloe Vera gel very helpful in cases those little creatures find you and leave a red mark on your skin.

Osijek Off The Beaten Path

  • Tvornica Duhana Rovinj

This is also a building you won't find in any tourist guide, and in fact it will be hard to find it among the standard industrial buildings of Osijek suburbia on the road to Čepin. This is a headquarters and a storage area of Tobacco Factory Rovinj in Osijek. A white wall splits the round building in half, separating the glass office part from...

  • Gradska stedionica

This is not exactly "Off the beaten track tip" as the building of the Savings Bank is situated on the main street leading eastwards from the main square.
