A local joke says "If you wave constantly with both your hands around your body you are either crazy or you are from Osijek". Just across the Drava river lies hundreds of square kilometres of swamp areas of Kopacki rit, which is a Nature reserve area. Among the numerous animal species that live there the most annoying ones are mosquitoes that see Osijek as nothing more than a great food reservate.
Although mosquitoes are treated constantly in wider urban area of Osijek, if you are visiting in the warmer period of the year prepare yourself for attack - bring some repellent, wear long sleeves for evening walks and wave with both your hands around yourself!

Yes, National Theatre in Osijek was heavily bombed and its interior almost totally destroyed in fire. Yes, local economy still suffers from the consequences of the recent war. Yes, local government has problems finding money to fund all projects this city needs.
But still - I have no understanding for person who authorised the opening of McDonald's restaurant in the ground floor of the National Theatre building. Some lines should be drawn for the national culture and a more appropriate use should be found for this place, even if it generated less money.

There are still mines in the area. As we drove between cities, we passed men in hazard suits, with metal detectors and dogs, clearing a field. An ambulance was parked next to them.
