See new Resorts around Dubrovnik area

Croatia - notes from our 2009 trip - From Italy we took the “Croazia Jet,” a high-speed catamaran ferry across the Adriatic from Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia. We sat in lazy-boy type seats with DVD movies for the 4-hour trip. After resolving a little mix-up about the Croatian rental car, we spent 5 nights in Croatia after driving down the coast to Jay and Christine’s home in Slano, Croatia. The Garmin GPS mapping was useless in Croatia because it showed only major highways. The entire country of Croatia has only about 2 million people. We thought that was comparable to a Miami, Fort Lauderdale and a Tampa combined which explains why the countryside seemed so desolate. We have become quite comfortable with Slano life, and this was probably our best visit ever. Each morning, 8 dollars American gets you 2 cappuccinos and either a bike or kayak rental. One night after dinner, at around...

Strolling in Sibenik

by TheWanderingCamel

Although you probably wouldn't want to stay in Sibenik - there are certainly more attractive places in Croatia - the city does warrant a visit if you're in the area as it is home to one of the country's most beautiful churches - the Cathedral of St Jacob (Katedrala Sveti Jakova) and, if you're coming to see the cathedral (or heading for the waterfalls of the Krka National Park), the old mediaeval heart of the city, with its narrow streets, steep stairways, attractive squares and old stone houses, is certainly worth a few hours of your time. As cities go along this stretch of coast, Sibenik's a relative newcomer, founded as it was by Slavs sometime in the 11th century, so nothing here dates back before those times. The Fortress of Sv Ana that dominates the city dates from the 13th century - it's a stiff climb to the top but the views are worth it. The 15th century saw the city fall under...

Njivice - Island of Krk

by Robmj

Zagreb

by Robmj

Zagreb, the capital is surprisingly good. To see its medieval past, visit the Gradec and Kaptol neighbourhoods (Upper Zagreb) which are on two hills and are just north of the main city (Lower Zagreb) square of Trg Jelacica. The gothic church of St Marks is the central point of Gradec. There are many monuments and sights nearby. There are lots of parks and musuems in Zagreb which make it a very pleasant city to stroll around. There are plenty of cafes and bars to liven things up as well.In all, a great place to visit.

Pula

by Robmj

Pula is a larger centre with lots of Roman ruins including the stunning and very well perserved amphitheatre that could be mistaken for the Colesseum in Rome.Apart from this stunner, you should visit the Roman walls along the eastern boundary of Pula, the Arch of Segius, the temple of Augustus and the old town hall. All are in easy walking distance of the town centre (Giardini). If you want a view of the town, climb upto the Venetian Citadel on the hill just west of Giardini. The Verudela Peninsula which is around 6kms southwest of the town centre is where plenty of tourist hotels and camps exist set by the sea and swimming areas.

Rovinj

by Robmj

Like Piran in Slovenia, this town is one of the last true Mediterranean fishing ports. The town is dominated by the 60m Cathedral tower of St Euphemia (built in 1736) perched up on the hill and high point of the town. This Cathedral is well worth a visit. The population is only around 14,000 but the town swells each day with tourists and beach seekers.A walk around the steep, narrow and cobbled streets is a great way to interact with the local storekeepers and artists selling their wares.Head down to the waterfront and you will find lots a good places to swim from the rocks or look at the 13 offshore islands that make up the Rovinj archipelago. There are loads of eating and drinking choices along with inexpensive to expensive accommodation. A great town to spend a day.

by Arkeolog

The Arch of Sergi is located on the most famous street of Pula. This is the main character of Pula cityview. The arch was erected between the years 29 and 27 BC by the Sergi family, in honor of three members of the family. You can see some mythological figures, such as Nikes, on the arch. Ýt is a really beautiful ancient monument.

ZAGREB-Gornji Grad(Upper City)

by Arkeolog

The old buildings, houses, churches and museums in the district known as the upper city (Gornji Grad) appear to have completely overcome all traces of the difficult war it experienced. St Mark’s Church with its tile-covered roof is a special surprise waiting here for tourists. Other important tourist sites in Zagreb include the Parliament Building, the National Museum of Fine Arts, and a museum that was converted from the house and workshop owned by the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrovic.

ZAGREB-St. Stephen Cathedral

by Arkeolog

Cathedral stands in Zagreb's Kaptol district, one of two old towns that make up the nucleus of Old Zagreb, and the building itself can accomodate up to 5,000 people. Zagreb Cathedral, consecrated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Stephen, is the most recognizable and impressive landmark of Zagreb. It's a fine sample of Gothic Achitecture, measures 77m long and 46m wide, and its twin spires reach a height of 105m.
