SPLIT-Diocletian's Palace

by Arkeolog

This palace is today the heart of the inner-city of Split where all the most important historical buildings can be found. The ruins of Diocletian's Palace, today called as a complex, built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D. the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages, reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum. 12th and 13th century Romanesque churches, medieval fortifications, 15th-century Gothic palaces and other palaces in Renaissance and Baroque style make up the rest of the area.In November 1979 UNESCO, in line with the international convention concerning the cultural and natural heritage, adopted a proposal that the historic Split inner city, built around the Palace, should be included in the register of the World Cultural Heritage.

SPLIT-Museum of Split

by Arkeolog

This museum located within the Palace of Diocletian. The museum, founded in 1946, is especially noted for its collection of books illustrating the history of the city of Split from the 12th to 18th Centuries. Also of interest to the visitor is the armory featuring weaponry from the 15th to 18th Centuries. I liked traditional costumes and lifestyle section of the museum. Statues by local artists, costomes, accessoires etc. are interesting and in my opnion best way to understand the local culture.

PULA-Amphitheatre or Arena

by Arkeolog

Arena is the name of the amphitheatre located in Pula. This building the only remaining Roman amphitheater to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. It is the sixth largest surviving Roman arena and a rare example, among the 200 Roman surviving amphitheatres, of unique technological solutions. It is also the best preserved ancient monument in Croatia.Arena was built in the 1st century AD, as the city of Pula became a regional center of Roman rule, called Pietas Julia. When you visit Pula, it is a real must see.

Cavtat

by TheWanderingCamel

Across the bay from Dubrovnik lies Cavtat, the southern-most seaside town in Croatia. Once a little fishing village, Cavtat's incarnation as a tourist destination dates back to the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Its proximity to Dubrovnik makes it an attractive location for hotel developers, with the result that there are several large package tour hotels there now, and, no doubt, lots more in the planning. They're not the only option for would-be visitors though. We checked at the small accommodation agency on the main road from Dubrovnik and found ourselves a lovely apartment up the hill from the centre of town, with a fabulous view over the bay. Our visit here was limited to an evening stroll down by the water, a delicious meal in a waterside restaurant and a quick flip back into town in the morning to take a couple of photos. We hadn't intended to stay there at all but a...

Dubrovnik Old City

by Robmj

The walled old town part of Dubrovnik is truely a world class place.Tourist maps handed out will show you different routes to follow and the full journey takes around 3½ hours to walk and covers the perimeter of the town by walking along the walls as well as wandering amongst the narrow streets. Of course, by the time you stop at the many places of interest, eat the fine food and drink a few Pivo's (beers) you can end up spending days exploring Dubrovnik. The main entrance is Pile Gate by the bus stop, the Placa just inside is the main street, but basically you should explore the entire town, don't rush your visit. The setting beside the Adriatic coast is just stunning. This is a must visit place.
