meat on the spit by galy It's costume in Croatia for some kinds of food to put the price on the menue, not by the porion, but by the KILOgram. First time we saw that, we were sorpriced, and order something elsr. Second time, we were braver, and asked, how much is the portion, and the waiter said:"about 350 grams". That's of course what was on the bill. Next time we ordered a portion for 2 without asking, and they put on the bill 700 grams. We thought we got the idea - the price is per kilo and the portion is about 350 grams. Third time in a small village restaurant we ordered again a portion for 2. It was prety small(although tasty) but on the bill they charged us with 800 grams.
Beware, and always ask in advance Leave a Comment

Looking north over the 'Ruins' of Mana by mtncorg In the heart of the Kornati Islands lies the beautiful island of Mana. Atop cliffs on the northern section of the island lie ruins evocative of much earlier times. Byzantium, Ragusa, Rome, Greece, Illyrium all run through your mind as you float along the island shore. Walking through the silent ruins, you can almost feel the ancients. Too bad the ruins actually only date to the 1960's when the site was developed as a movie set.
It is still fun to wander among the old ruins, taking pictures. Your friends back home will not know any different:-} On the seaward side, cliffs invite you to prepare yourself for Acapulco. A nice side trip is to hike up the crest to the peaks to the south gianing more views to more Kornati dreams offshore.
The tourist trap is fun so forget the alternative. Leave a Comment

by slawekjb FOR ANY BUDGET TRAVELLER THIS COUNTRY IS ONE GIGANTIC TOURIST TRAP- AT LEAST IN THE SUMMER. CEILING HIGH PRICES FOR EVERYTHING.
TALK TO LOCALS AND ASK THEM TO GIVE ADVICE. SOME WILL HELP FINDING SOLUTION TO ONE'S PARTICULAR PROBLEM (OTHER THAN HIGH PRICES AT A RESTAURANT OR A HOTEL...).
GO TO OTHER COUNTRY AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY THE WAY YOU SHOULD. Leave a Comment

Leave it on the shelf! by TheWanderingCamel We've all done it. Accepted the complimentary drink at the end of a meal, sipped it and thought "This is lovely" and bought a bottle to bring home with us - a luvverly reminder of that balmy summer evenings on the terrace of whatever restaurant we happened to find a particular favourite of a wonderful holiday. What happens to this stuff between buying it and opening it at home? That "delicious" pear brandy - or whatever it was, just doesn't taste the same without the moon on the water, the boats bobbing by the dock, the candlelit shadows on the konoba wall.
It does a great job of mascerating the fruit for the Christmas cake. A bottle should see you through about 10 Christmases Leave a Comment

A quiet Trogir street by ChrisAlexander Trogir can become crowded, especially in the evenings.
But it's just about possible to sneak around during the day to enjoy getting lost in the narrow cobbled streets.
Alternative? See 'Off the Beaten Path' island tip. Leave a Comment

by Maurizioago Sibenik has a beautiful cathedral, two nice squares, but what else?
I choose Sibenik as a base for a daytrip to the Krka National Park (see travelogue).

SICK PUMPKINS by matcrazy1 . Croatian bars (in the season) are exciting: full of nice people, delicious beer, wine, spirits, drinks etc. And they are opened looong (sometimes till sunrise). So better not to drink too fast not to loose great party. .
. Get a taxi to your hotel. Drink as much mineral water (no gas) as you can before sleeping. Sleep looooong not to have hangover next/the same day :-).
. If you have hangover drink fast 1 Karlocacko beer :-). Try soft drinks. Leave a Comment

by CarineBXL In Dubrovnik, avoid visiting the Aquarium, which is not very interesting, even if the advertisements tell the contrary! Here is picture of a friendly octopus alone in its little tank. Leave a Comment

After seeing the beautiful coast, the rest of the country can only be disappointing. Don't bother with it. Leave a Comment
