Private accommodation in Croatia - tips

by pam9

Croatia is a little bit special with that kind of accommodation offer. The number of facilities in that category of accomodation is really huge. If you are looking for apartment, holiday house, room or villa in Croatia you need to know several things...First, you must know that there are many accommodation facilities in Croatia which is really ok. and the owners are in tourism for many years and they act like profesionals. But, you also must know that it is the same number of owners who are not profesionals and don't know (or don't care) about anything exept money. So, if you have good intuition(6th sense) you can try to find accommodation in Croatia by yourself on the internet. This is one story......Four people would like to come in Croatia so they found one apartment on the internet with pictures and everything. Great. They pay some 30% of total price. When they came they hardly...

Big offer = good agency?

by pam9

Do you think that the agencies with the biggest offer are the best?Wrong again. It is not problem to have the big offer on your website. Many agencies have affiliate and exchange programs and it is simple to put it all on website even you are not an travel agent at all. At least try to find the real travel agency. In Croatia every agency must have the agency code and it will be somewhere on their webpage. Try to find the local travel agency from the destination in which you are going to travel.

Something that you must know about...

by pam9

This is one of the usual mistake :The biggest agencies are the cheapest.Maybe that statement has some point if you are looking for some big hotel accommodation but otherwise is not true. Specially regarding private accommodation(apartments, holiday houses, villas but also small hotels...). You must know that many big agencies(especially if they are not croatian agency) use smaller croatian agencies as a supplier of accommodation and services for their guests. That means that big agency must pay commission to smaller agency......no,no.... the true is that you will pay that commission :(I have the information that some of the biggest agencies in Croatian travel market (that includes foreign travel agencies as well) has a 20-30% higher prices from some smaller agencies....... it looks impossible but it is true. Find the right croatian travel agency. Also, compare the prices from several...

Online booking sharks....

by pam9

Many people think that the travel websites(online agencies) with good search engine position and most banners and ads on Google, Yahoo etc are the right choice.Wrong. They just have the biggest marketing budget. Some agencies take whole offer from several smaller agencies and put it all on their websites. They raise prices 20% and wait for you. I believe that some of them even don't know where Croatia is...... Take some time and surf the web..compare the prices.....and read few travel forums as well...

Pubs, clubs and restaurants!

by Marina_tom

Always check and compare the prices written on the menu and prices on your bill! If the waiter doesn't bring your bill, ask for it! That's especially important if you are going to the south of Croatia, on the coast and small cities. It is really not rare that the waiters charge you more if they see that you are foreign tourist.

The most of croatian beaches have Not fine sand...

by diamond7

The seashore in Croatia is wonderful, anyway, the most of beaches have Not sand. There are a lot of beaches with pebbles and others have only the rocks. So if you only want beaches with fine sand, take care about your choose. Anyway, you can find some sandbeaches, in Brac island, Lopud island, and a few others small islands.

Croatia generally is overrated

by ZAJohnstone

I must immediately state that my visit to Croatia was limited to the coastline between Split and Dubrovnik. While the coastline undoubtably is fantastic, be aware of the following: (a) if the weather turns on you there is little else to do (b) the food is limited to pizza and pasta (c) the hotels are generally run down and expensive - we found better value in London than Croatia (d) Hvar was, simply put, boring. What seems to be the best proposition is to take one of the multi-day sailing trips from Split. At least there you will really experience secluded beaches on deserted islands.

Plitvice National Park

by DanielF

In my opinion, the national Park of the Plitvice Lakes is somewhat overrated. It is certainly a place of stupendous natural beauty, full of lakes with turquise water and many cascades. However, it is like many other beautiful national parks around Europe, not something really extraordinary. Besides, it was so crowded (it was high season), that the visit was even unpleasant at times. In any case, everything was perfectly organised, with public transportation (electric trains and boats) to move tourists around efficiently. At the time, the Krajina was a sad area to cross, as you could still clearly see the wounds of war: it was full of empty villages with homes burnt down after they had been abandoned by the Serbians forced to leave the country after the war.

Price by the Kilogram

by galy

It's costume in Croatia for some kinds of food to put the price on the menue, not by the porion, but by the KILOgram.First time we saw that, we were sorpriced, and order something elsr. Second time, we were braver, and asked, how much is the portion, and the waiter said:"about 350 grams". That's of course what was on the bill. Next time we ordered a portion for 2 without asking, and they put on the bill 700 grams. We thought we got the idea - the price is per kilo and the portion is about 350 grams. Third time in a small village restaurant we ordered again a portion for 2. It was prety small(although tasty) but on the bill they charged us with 800 grams. Beware, and always ask in advance

CROATIA IS...

by slawekjb

FOR ANY BUDGET TRAVELLER THIS COUNTRY IS ONE GIGANTIC TOURIST TRAP- AT LEAST IN THE SUMMER. CEILING HIGH PRICES FOR EVERYTHING. TALK TO LOCALS AND ASK THEM TO GIVE ADVICE. SOME WILL HELP FINDING SOLUTION TO ONE'S PARTICULAR PROBLEM (OTHER THAN HIGH PRICES AT A RESTAURANT OR A HOTEL...). GO TO OTHER COUNTRY AND ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY THE WAY YOU SHOULD.
