Buses (coaches)

by diocletianvs

Buses (coaches) are the best way to move around Croatia. The network consists of numerous private companies and can be somewhat confusing. In general buses are modern and air-conditioned (which is not the case with 2nd class train cars). There are bus lines to literally all places you might consider visiting, and on major routes there are many departures - for instance, on the Zagreb - Split route there are departures every 30 minutes where some 20 different companies compete. Buses are popular way of transport so buying your ticket a day or two in advance for major routes is not a bad idea. Especially if you are using the second leg of your return ticket (which is always 20-30% cheaper) when you don't have much flexibility since you must return with the same company you used on your first leg. Also remember that you should buy a seat reservation for the return trip even in cases when...

Ferries & Boats within Croatia

by diocletianvs

The largest ferry company in Croatia is Jadrolinija (www.jadrolinija.hr) that has frequent ferry services to almost all inhabited islands of Croatian Adriatic. The so-called Fast Line is linking Rijeka with Zadar, Split, Hvar, Korcula and finishes in Dubrovnik - Rijeka to Split stretch is always overnight while Split to Dubrovnik is by day and it's one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world (sailing among many islands). Other ferry companies that might be of your interest are: SEM MARINA (www.sem-marina.hr) - based in Split, offering ferry and catamaran links to Dalmatian islands. MIA TOURS (www.miatours.hr) - based in Zadar, with hydrofoil service to nearby islands. LOSINJSKA PLOVIDBA (www.losinjska-plovidba.hr) - linking Losinj with Zadar and Pula. RAPSKA PLOVIDBA (www.rapska-plovidba.hr) - ferries to island of Rab (Jablanac - Misnjak) and from Rab to Pag. If you don't have...

Ferries & Boats to Croatia

by diocletianvs

Between Italy and Croatia there are frequent ferry links, especially during the summer. The main lines are Bari-Dubrovnik, Ancona-Split, Ancona-Zadar and Venice to western coast of Istria. Almost all companies have their websites where you can book tickets in advance, which is a smart idea if you're travelling during the busy weekends in July or August. JADROLINIJA (www.jadrolinija.hr) is the largest Croatian ferry company, and its ferries sail on Bari to Dubrovnik and link Ancona with Zadar and Split. SEM / SMC ferry (www.smc-ferry.com) has links from Ancona to Split, but also to some mid-Dalmatian islands which is great if you want to avoid the crowded ferry port in Split. ADRIATICA (www.adriatica.it) is Italian ferry company, sailing on Split - Ancona route. AGESTEA (www.agestea.com) is also Italian ferry company sailing on Bari - Dubrovnik route. Most of the ferry crossings are...

Up/Down the Adriatic

by paulcantlon

Arriving in the North of Croatia (Opatja) We made our way down to Rijeka (pron -Reeyecka), to the Isle of KRK where there is a small airfield. We managed to purchase some very cheap flights down to Dubrovnik. An hour flight later we arrived. We travelled up the coast of Croatia from Dubrovnic on Ferries (Jadrolinija) which proved quite cheap and provided a picturesque view of the Croatian coastline. The ferries run daily throughout the high season, and have capabilities to carry vehicles. The ferries call at al major ports. Once in the towns you can travel virtually anywhere by foot with no problems at all.

Ferries around the South Dalmatia coat

by eiresoldier

Hundreds of islands in Croatia best way to get there is by ferries which run daily and are reasonable enough you would need a year to see every island id say but the main ones we went to were Korcula and Hvar just a few pictures on the scenery you can expect

By train

by ChrisAlexander

By train from Split north to Zagreb through Dalmatia. To really see the contrasting beauty of Croatia, take a train or travel by road to or from the coast. The scenery inland will show what is sometimes passed by as people travel to the resorts. It rained almost immediately as we left the coast and headed inland through Knin, the sunshine just slipped behind the clouds for a while and gave us chance to cool down in the stuffy train compartment.

Catch the Ferry through the Islands Down to Dubrov

by tylercdurden2004

The ferry is a great way to see the islands and the beauty of Croatia and besides its more comfortable than the bus. Its very cheap, for a 9 hour ride it cost me less than 10 pound sterling less than US$ 20. It leaves from Hvar at Stari Grad on the other side of the island and it leaves at like 8 am. THe ferry has all the amenities you need and if its nice you can sit on teh deck the whole way and see the beautiful scenery of the islands.

Tram

by ChrisAlexander

Any city with trams appeals to me. Probably because they?re quite a rare site in England?s cities these days. I?m sure I?m not alone when I say that I like to hop on a tram and get to know a place by riding around looking out of the window, looking at people, listening to the language spoken in that place and getting a feel for somewhere new. I love it. This tram was all mine one evening as I travelled back to the flat I was staying in (see accommodation tip).

Buses only! No trains

by lonely_traveller

Despite there is a rail track from Zagreb to Split, only one to two trains operate per day. Moreover, it always leave in the odd time and are very slow. Better use the buses instead. They are frequent, comfortable and the roads are well maintained.

Road conditions

by amav

The roads are good but small, if you travel at the borders of bosnia the roads are small and full of turns but generaly are good.If you are a stranger you dont have problem with the destinations because there are signs with destinations almost everywhere but be careful inside the sities and mostly in zagreb because the problem with signs is not big but exist. At the motorways toll post in the entrance you take a ticket and when exiting the motorway you pay the ammount. (You see in a screen at the toll post when they sign your ticket how much kunas you must pay on exiting so i thing is not a problem because they also give you a receipt.)
