Vis is not the easiest destination to get to but the best places never are. There are a variety of options to arrive to the island. The most usual is to fly to Split. Several air companies (Ryanair, Easy Jat, Sky Europe, Wizzair, British Airways, Croatia Airlines) have flights to Split. It's advisable to research all of them before booking.
Another possibility to get to Split is by bus from all major croatian cities (Zagreb, Rijeka, Zadar, Dubrovnik...). I went from Ljubljana to Split by car. The distance is about 470 km and since there is a highway to Split, it only took 5 hours.
From Split to Vis island you take a ferry of Jadrolinija, Croatia's largest liner shipping company. It leaves several times daily and the shipping takes 2,5 hours. You better check their website for timetable and the prices as they may vary regarding the season.
