In St. Mary church, in apse is a door which leads to staircase where you can climb to the terrace and the roof. From up there you'll have a great view of Vrboska and surroundings.
I was one of the first of our group up there and first I hesitated a bit to step on the roof. I didn't look that stabil. But late proved to be very firm, holding whole bunch of students.

Vrboska has one very unusual sight, St. Mary Church, which is also a fort. In the past, when town needed a new church and a new fort, there was simply not enough money to build them both. So, they kind of combined both buildings. In peace-time it was a church, in war-time people found a refuge inside the stone walls.
This kind of combination is very rare. We were told that there is only one other (somewhere in France).

The renaissance church of St. Mar dates back to 1580. After the attacks of the Turks on Island Hvar it was fortified. This gives the church its current impressive look.
