To the waistline that is. The icecream here in Croatia is soooo delicious, the variety amazing and when the weather's as hot as it was when we were there, all resolve to be good and not give in goes by the board and a single daily ration is not enough. Don't say you haven't been warned! Leave a Comment

Pesky sea urchins! by ChrisAlexander Find a pair of rubber sandals on the markets or in the shops that might help with walking on the rocky shores of the Adriatic and also perhaps avoid some of the sea urchins sticking their spiky spines in your soft tender feet when going into the water. It's not difficult to see them living under the surface against the rocks. Having said this, I still got spikes in my leg when I swam one day while wearing the sandals. To remove the spines from skin it helps to use olive oil to loosen them. "If they are not removed they will become infected" says my travel book tip. I carried my little urchin spikes for a couple of weeks after my return from Croatia and they didn't become infected, they just came out naturally. Leave a Comment

Your typical beach in Croatia by sabsi If you intend to go swimming in the Adriatic here's a warning for you. There are hardly any sandy beaches but mostly pebbled (or even concrete) beaches. If you - like me - are a whimp when it comes to walking on big spiky pebbles, get yourself some swim shoes. They are also helpful to avoid contact with sea urchins... No need to get them before you come here, the cheap version of them is sold everywhere on the street markets in the coastal towns. If only I had read my own tip before trying to walk into water. Ouch! (In the end I survived by wearing my flipflops!) Oh and, don't worry because of the pebbled beaches, I actually liked it because you don't have sand in your eyes, between your teeth and in your camera after having been to the beach... plus the water is crystal-clear! by maltese24 The war in Croatia ended around 10 yrs ago. One might think that Croatia is dangerous because of that, but its NOT. However, there is one city, called Vukovar which is the symbol of Croatian independence. It is a must see although it is destroyed. I was really impressed walking through this city. However, it is not dangerous. Leave a Comment

by acemj Of course, the ethnically-fueled turmoil of the '90s has left its scars on Croatia, but you can feel safe in visiting these days. The country's infrastructure is suitable for visitors and what it has to offer in natural sights and historical treasures is really quite amazing. Leave a Comment

It is only natural to visit Dubrovnik (after all, what did you come to Croatia for?) and, if you rent a car, it is very tempting to visit Montenegro - only half an hour away. First, let me state that I did it and enjoyed it, and recommend that you do it too, but.... Although almost all Croatian rental agencies (certainly all the big ones) allow you to drive to Montenegro, the insurance is another matter. There are those who refuse to insure driving in Montenegro ("drive at your own risk"), there are others who provide insurance for an added premium, and there are still others whose insurance covers driving to Montenegro at no extra charge. Make sure you get *in writing*: (1) Exactly what the insurance covers (relative to driving in Croatia at least); (2) What it *doesn't* cover; (3) What is the exact procedure to follow in Montenegro if something happens (police report, towing, repairs etc.) Leave a Comment

Border crossing delay at Neum by mtncorg Don't hide away your passport when you are driving south to Dubrovnik. About 85 km north of Dubrovnik, you will drive through a 5 km section of coastline that was given to Turkey as a result of 19th century treaties. That coastline has now been inherited by Bosnia i Hercegovina and border control stations are present at each of the crossings. Neum, itself, is a small resort at the end of the Nerevantski Kanal, pitched along steep slopes. You can use any konvertible markas from BiH if you have been there or everywhere will take Croatian kunas, as well. Leave a Comment

by diocletianvs If you can, try to avoid traveling on one of notorious weekends during the summer. Traffic jams are the worst on weekend around July 15th, August 1st and August 15th. In fact, new motorways have enabled Croatians to reach the sea in 3-4 hours so many locals are taking short weekend breaks on Friday afternoon returning on Sunday evening which is a guarantee for blocked motorways. If possible, try planning your trip so that you don't get stuck in traffic jams for hours. Going a day earlier or postponing your trip for next Monday or Tuesday will mean a less stressful travel. If you must hit the road on one of the busy summer weekends make sure you bring lots of patience and lots of water. HAK website has webcams on the most problematic sections of the motorways so you can check the conditions online. Leave a Comment

by canaglic It is quite safe to travel all over Croatia and mugging and thefts are not a problem. You can safely walk in any town at night, but use your common sense, as always. In some coastal resorts, as is common all over the Mediterranean, single women may be approached or wolf whistled at. Say no firmly and you will not be bothered. In case of any problems, approach a policeman or even a soldier, who will assist you. Both the Croatian police and the army are well disciplined. If you have a language problem, approach a younger person (teenagers/students) as they all speak some English and will be eager to help. Leave a Comment

by blint Just off the the main street on zudioska (zhoodioska) lies the 2nd oldest sephardic synagogue in Europe and the Jewish museum. I really wanted to go and visit it and tried 3 days in a row during what the main door said were the opening hours. For some annoying reason each time I tried it was shut!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if it was because I was there in the festive or off season or what, but it was very disappointing that there was no notice on the door explaining what was happening. frustratingly enough the same thing happened to me two years ago in Budapest with the synagogue and Jewish museum there!
