1. croatian cities are very safe. it's very safe wolk through cities in any time of the day or the night... It's very safe to use public transportation in any time...2. WAR IS OVER (FOR LONG TIME AGO)

Racial hatred

by mariquita

The war in Yugoslavia is gone a long time ago, but many people have kept a bellicous state of mind. If you visited Yugoslavia in the happy 1980s, you just cannot believe how irrational and stupid people can get. A shame.

Vorsicht beim Anlegen!

by Rhoenbaeuml

Safety

by canaglic

It is quite safe to travel all over Croatia and mugging and thefts are not a problem. You can safely walk in any town at night, but use your common sense, as always. In some coastal resorts, as is common all over the Mediterranean, single women may be approached or wolf whistled at. Say no firmly and you will not be bothered. In case of any problems, approach a policeman or even a soldier, who will assist you. Both the Croatian police and the army are well disciplined. If you have a language problem, approach a younger person (teenagers/students) as they all speak some English and will be eager to help.

Discretion is always a good idea

by Sternel

Be discreet about your identity as a tourist -- especially if you are American. There is an assumption that all Americans are rich, and willing to throw their money around, and I did encounter those who felt they could just take said money. Do not flash foreign bills. Change your money as soon as possible and always use the local currency. If you know a language other than english, use that first. Act with discretion and respect for the local culture and you shouldn't have any problems

sobe, sobe!

by call_me_rhia

This is a warning especially for Split: mond the women that approach youwhen you get off the bus: they are all screaming sibe, sobe! - which means that they have a room free at thrie house that they would like to rent you. Nothing wrong with this - but in Split they actually grab you and/or your suitcase or backpack and try hysterically to force you to follow them. Let's say that their attitude raises a few questions about how pleasant or quiet your stay will be. The tourist office, btw, has a list of "official" rooms.

Land mines

by matcrazy1

.Although there is no war in Croatia for years in some places - especially near border with Bosnia & Herzegovina - there are areas with land mines. I found one, well signed (look at my picture: Attention! Mines! Entry strictly forbidden!). There are some destroyed houses and cars by the road, too - look at my travelogue: War is over..

None to speak of

by Venturingnow

I think that Croatia is one of the most peaceful places I've visited. I was so used to being stared at that once I landed in Croatia, I thought I was home again. People just went about their business, didn't look at you stangely, or try to take advantage of you either.

Stay away from local individuals who are trying to exchange money by the 'GREAT RATE'. Use marked exchange offices and banks. Trust me when I tell you that BLACK MARKET EXCHANGE can get you in lots of trouble.

by Shafali

Just a mild warning, I guess.....I didn't mind, but on the coastal towns it seems we were followed by guys all the time. They were really cool and we did not have a problem with it. But just to let any female travelling alone who might not like the attention...it does happen like the Lonely Planet Guide says. And watch out for little rowdy kids in Dubrovnik's Old Town who were terrorizing the locals with string attached to a heavy object, used to whip at people's butts. I thought it was funny but others didn't.
