by DiscoM

Many children are brought up in Mullet communities. This sort of child abuse is common. The child has no alternative but to obey. I have alerted Amnesty International, but the situation is still volatile and we don't expect a resolution soon.

by kylamees

Avoid 'sea hedgehogs' or sea-urchins (looking like small hedgehogs) if swimming off the sandy beaches! There are a lot of them especially at the rocky beaches. On the picture: Sea-urchins left their pricks into feet of swimmers. Its awful to get them out!

by Tenen

The winters are really harsh around here Make sure you bring plenty of warm garments.'Bura' is the strongest, northern wind coming from Dinaric range mountains, it literally freezes your bones, especially when starts howling from Dinara. The best cure for Bura is a glass of red wine, or, alternatively a glass of home-made 'rakija'(slivovitz brandy).'Jugo' (scirocco) is a warmer southern wind and usually brings nicer weather, but with rain. The mixture of Mediterranean and Continental climate brings scorching summers, ideal for outdoor excursions.

by datapanik

Colonies of sea urchins are common around the rocky shorelines. Stepping on one is very painful indeed and something you won't want to repeat unless you have masochistic tendencies! So a pair of plastic sandals for swimming is a recommended purchase. These can be picked up cheaply from one of the tourist shops lining the harbour.

by lukec

Don't wander off the beaten path too much in the former Krajina area (Plitvice-Zadar-Knin triangle) as the landmines from the unfortunate Yugoslav wars still haven't been cleared up. The roads are OK and safe though.

by Annabella

Men in this region and VERY VERY AGGRESSIVE. it's no wonder the war atrocities have happened. I have traveled all over the world, including Latin and Middle Eastern countries and have never encountered anything quite like this. Women need to very cautious and should not go anywhere alone with a local man, outside of public areas. I am not the only one to have encountered this (Let's Go warns about it, Yugoslav women warned me about it). Be completely on your guard. Serbo-Croatian for police is 'policija' (policiya pronunciation). I found that shouting this word over and over again got most people off my trail.

by AlfB

There are sections of Croatia which have not yet been cleared of land mines. When in these areas, it is wise to stay on the paths and not to go traipsing off into the fields unless one has been assured that it's safe.

by Natrix

According to law you have to register the place where you are staying during your stay in Croatia at the police office within the first 48 hours you spend in one town. When you stay at a hotel for example, you might be asked to leave your passport for a day at the reception. Meanwhile you will be registered at the police office and you'll get a little card, saying when you entered the country, at which address you are currently staying etc., that you should always carry, together with your passport, with you. Or if you are staying at a friend's house for instance, you will have to go with him to the police station to register. During the summer months in tourist regions it might be tolerated if you are not registered, but when you're travelling in the eastern part of the country you should avoid it. If a policeman asks you to show your passport and your registration-card and you don't...

by masegal

On the coast, don't worry about the effects of the war - only a small factor in inland Knin and eastern Slavonia, where tourists generally don't go. Because many people stopped going, it is not as built up and crowded as many other beautiful beaches are. So go and enjoy the beauty and peace!
