Ring the bell

You can ring the bells by pulling these ropes at the basis of the bell tower. They are connected with bells on top of the tower. Although I was tempted, I also resisted the temptation, knowing that the priest wouldn’t be very happy of hearing the bells on Friday at 11.37 am.

A little bit to the north from Miljana castle there’s a narrow road leading to 301 metres high point where the chapel of Sta Ana is located. It is an old church with one nave and small bell tower on the front façade. It was under some reconstruction that obviously lasts for several years….
On the side of the path leading to the chapel a Walk of the Cross is added recently by some local sculptor.

What a view :-)

There are several culminating points, usually hidden behind curvy and narrow roads leading through the woods where only the braves dare to drive. But once you get to the top of the hills it offers magnificent views of the surrounding meadows, valleys and other hills covered with vineyards. That is: it offers, once it’s not as foggy day as was the day we chose to see Zagorska sela :-)

View from the car

First you just have to relax and enjoy the view, even from the car. The landscape will move as you pass through the woods. Sometimes the fog gives the landscape a mysterious mood as you can see only the several trees and the rest is left to your imagination…..

Turkeys are traditional animals in Zagorje. Original is knows as “Zagorski puran” and is usually darker than these that decided to pose for my photograph. Be careful while driving since the turkeys usually go freely around, and if it ends up under yor wheels the owner will insist that you buy it and pay for the damages. It can end up as a pretty expensive dinner :-)

Favorite Dish: We didn’t kill any turkey on the road, but we went to Desinic for a lunch consisting of turkey meat and traditional home-made pastry, followed by cheese pie. Check my (future) Desinic page for details….

Warnings and Dangers

Watch out for the trucks

Well, when the roads are only a little bit wider than 3 meters a truck coming from the opposite direction presents a clear and present danger. Especially if it goes downhill. Just turn to the reverse and drive to the nearest wider place – sometimes several hundred meters and several serpentines away ….

Favorite thing: The funny thing about the bridge is that it is the border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia ? Aqua park belongs to Podcetrtek spa center in Slovenia, while the bar is in Croatia. The sign says "Republic of Croatia - State border".
Another funny thing is that in the bar on Croatian side you can get only Lasko i.e. Slovenian beer.
Since May 2004 this is the southeast border of the European Union.

Favorite thing: At the northern end of Zagorska sela a village of Harina Zlaka is located. On the other side of Sutla river large spa center is built. These slides belong to a large Aqua park located almost on the river. The small house on the left of the photo is a small bar selling cheap beer. They are connected by a small yellow bridge.

Favorite thing: On traditional plot you won’t find only the house but also the building consisting of the shed for animals and storage of the agricultural tools as well as the storage for corn and other products. These buildings are sometimes even bigger than the main house where family would live. This one belongs to the Blue House.

Favorite thing: Traditionally, blue vitriol was added to a regular mortar in order to achieve some colourful facades – usually belonging to some richer villager. Old beauties like this one are not hard to find around Zagorska sela. Older houses were made of wood, sometimes even them painted in blue….
