Billa rotor

They don't have the charm of the market places, but hypermarkets have their qualities. You have trolley and don't have to carry all the stuff. There's always an empty parking space. You can pay with credit cards. And it's cheaper than at the market.

So, I can understand people that are switching to hypermarkets for their weekly shopping.

What to buy: Everything

Tepih Centar

At the corner of Avenija Dubrovnik and Avenija Veceslava Holjevca there's this funny looking department store that now houses Tepih Centar (Carpet Center).
On the other side of Avenija Dubrovnik, a former USA pavillion of the Zagreb Fair is turned into Tepih Land shop (Carpet Land).

What to buy: So, if you need a new carpet, Novi Zagreb is good place to go shopping.

Kajzerica: Kajzerica China Town

Detail from Kajzerica

Kajzerica is an old neighbourhood north-west from Velesajam, that was here long before Novi Zagreb was built. Recently it became very popular amongst the Chinese population in Zagreb as they created a local version of China town here.

Many people arrive here just to hear Chinese people speak Croatian. Since Croatian is very hard to learn, no one expects anyone to speak it but it seems that people from China have no problems learning it – after a couple of months they speak fluent Croatian. (Maybe because Croatian is still easier than Chinese?)

What to buy: There are lots of small shops here selling many cheap goods, so this is a good place to go shopping if you like devices that stop working as you bring them home or clothes that become dust-clothes after you wash them for the first time. If you’re preparing a firework this is the best place to do your shopping.

HgSpot: Computer Shop

Hg Spot

HG Spot is the largest seller of computers in Croatia. This is their new building where you'll find everything from the computer configurations to computer components and other home electronics (TVs, videos, cameras etc).
I love this shop since they have a good website where you can search for everything (with good explanations). Shop personnel is usually ignorant but it's supermarket-style so good thing is that you can actually see, touch and feel the things you're buying (well, at least cheaper items) - not a feature of most computer shops.

What to buy: Computers & electronics

Paviljon 12 - Interijer Centar: Furniture

Paviljon 12

Pavillion #12 of the Zagreb Trade Fair is situated at the perimeter of the Trade Fair area, so they have a special entrance from the outside and are a home to numerous smaller home furniture shops.

The pavillion is huge and is an excellent example of brutalist architecture of raw concrete.

What to buy: Furniture.

Fish market

If you don't like meat then there's a wide selection of fish at the fish market section of Trznica Utrina.
The ladies were in such a good mood and convinced they'll end up in tomorrow's newspaper.

What to buy: Fresh fish, caught in the Adriatic and transported overnight to Zagreb.

Chicken meat from Zelina

Still at Utrina market, now it's time to buy some meat. At this stall they have a good selection of chicken from Zelina.

What to buy: At the meat part there are many specialized stalls - from chicken, pork, veal to smoked ham and other delicacies.

Fruits at Utrina market

Saturday morning shopping at the market place is not just ordinary shopping - it's a cult, like the coffee with friends that usually follows.

Market place is also a place of socializing - many people have their old ladies (kumica) where they buy every time.

What to buy: Fresh fruits, some local, some imported.

Utrina market

There is an old tradition of an open-air markets in Croatia. Despite the fact that many new supermarkets have quite good selection of fruits and vegetables, an open-air market is still a must for most people.

There are several markets in Novi Zagreb, the largest one is in Utrina and it is quite crowded on Saturday mornings.

What to buy: If you're looking for fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables then Utrina market is a must.
