I had heard about this cake specialty before a lot of times so I had to try it of course. HAHA I kinda knew that the first of these wabbly vanilla custard cakes wasn't the last one I had. In the end I stopped counting how many of them I had ;)

You get them in every café that serves cake basically and you pay around 10 kn for a piece of cake ... which basically is a piece of cake for something as delicious as Kremšnita!

Popular products of Croatia are based on fruits of Dalmatia, like figs and olives. Dried figs are available as a kind of tasty jam in a glass jar, whereas olives are used for olive oil, or come in a pickled version sometimes stuffed with almonds.
Be prepared to get these kind of products as a present on VT meetings .... :o)

The Croatian language is quite funny at times when you are a German speaker. There are many words which originate in the German language but the spelling is Croatian. My favourite words were sendvic (Sandwich), švarzvald (Black Forest Gateau ... from the German word Schwarzwald) and bedinerica (house maid) and I really enjoyed learning new ones all the time.

Unfortunately I didn't know enough of the language to talk to waiters or people in shops. As they only spoke little English or German I failed quite badly trying sign language but I guess that's all "part of the experience"...

    Medenica/medovaca

  • Medenica, also called medovaca (mead), is a liquor made of honey, a traditional drink in this region. Naturally, due to its honey origin, it has a very sweet, honey-like taste and yellow colour, and it's quite strong. It's popular as an appetizer in restaurants but you can also find it in most of the local pubs - the cheeper they look, the more chances you'll find medenica there.

A shot of medenica is usually around 5-7 HRK (less than 1 euro).
Should you like it that much, you can buy a bottle in most of the liquor stores as well as souvenir shops.

    A Kremsnita and a coffee

A local speciality in the cafes of Zagreb is Kremsnita, which is a kind of vanilla custard cream pastry. One of the most traditional places to get a Kremsnita is Slasticarnica Vincek at Ilica Street 18.
I enjoyed a coffee and a Kremsnita with my VT friend diocletianvs (Niksa) in an outdoor cafe just in the city centre.

When you meet the local VTers you can't avoid this local custom really - the heated discussion about whether or not the "skyscraper" called Neboder at Trg bana Jelacica is ugly. Boris and Zdenka claim yes, Nikša says no.

When they asked me what I think I told them that I liked it because it made me find my way back to the main square many times.

Saturday mornings in Zagreb aren't about coffee only but it's a social happening. People go for a coffee in one of Zagreb's many coffeehouses to see and to be seen. Of course we couldn't miss this so Boris, Zdenka, Nikša and I joined the crowd and had a coffee (well the others had, I felt a bit outsider because I don't drink coffee ;)

  • Stjepan Radic's grave - Zagreb
    Stjepan Radic's grave
    by roza_hr
November 1, All Saints Day, is one of the most important national holidays in Croatia, when we remember those who are no longer living. We bring flowers and candles to their graves and pay respect to who they were and what they ment to us. I'm sure all cemetaries are fascinating on this day but I believe the most beautiful and certainly the most famous one is Mirogoj, situated on the hilly north-eastern part of Zagreb. Thousands of people have found their peace there, including some of the most important people of Croatian history and culture, such as Stjepan Radic, Petar Preradovic, Miroslav Krleza, Ivana Brlic Mazuranic and many more. Most of the famous were buried in the arcades which surround the western part of the cemetary.

Some people like to go early in the morning and some go after dinner, which is normally a family get-together. For me, the best time to go is late in the evening, to enjoy the sight of thousands of candles shining throught the night. I usually go with my family to visit the graves of our relatives and then I meet up with friends and we have a walk around the graveyard. It is both wonderful and creepy, and certainly strange to see those decorated graves, flowers and light, which give the impression of life among those who are dead. As if you are visiting real homes of real people, not just dead ghosts or distant memories...and yet you're the only one there alive, while the last visitors are hurrying home.

    Who will run for presidency?
    by sabsi
When I was in Zagreb in December 2004 there were little booths everywhere with posters of politicians. I wondered what they are and was told that these people collect signatures because if they can collect 10,000 signatures they are allowed to run for presidency.

  • My Licitar Heart - Zagreb
    My Licitar Heart
    by sabsi
Zagreb's symbol is the Licitar heart (licitarka srca), a little heart made of dough which is covered with red glaze and normally has some decoration and a mirror on it. They look like gingerbread hearts but you can't eat them!

I was in Zagreb shortly before christmas and all christmas trees were decorated with these hearts. In the streets there weren't the usual tacky christmas lights but heart shaped ones everywhere. I thought it was beautiful. You could also buy little decorations for your christmas tree which had the special look but weren't all heart-shaped.

You can't only buy the hearts as a souvenir at christmas but all year. I bought mine on Dolac market, a kinda big heart cost 15 kn there. In the souvenir shop at the airport they were much more expensive.
