Zagreb airport is small. We thought we'd treat ourselves and eat at its only proper sit-down restaurant, and it's something which turned out to be one of the highlights of the whole trip.
It's not that the food is amazing. My experience of food in Croatia is that there is a lot of very mediocre Italian/international fare on offer, and from this perspective the menu and the food itself at the airport was certainly very familiar. That's not to say the dishes are bad; we enjoyed our food and the servings were generous without being over the top. They just aren't at the same standard you'd find elsewhere these days, and I include the UK in that.
No, it's absolutely the service that makes this place special. Although they must see lots of indifferent travellers whiling away their time without actively choosing to eat here, the waiters put a lot into their work. In particular, we had an old-school waiter with a wonderful moustache, who was efficient, formal and very precise. 'No, sir', 'May, I young lady?' (that was me, age 32), 'Allow me, sir'. A little discomforting for these diners, used to far more informal service at much more expensive restaurants, yet strangely cheering at the same time. Here is a place that is proudly and genuinely sticking to traditional ideas of waiting and decorum, something you don't get to experience every day.
The overall ambiance fit - basic looking tables, nevertheless set with care. You can watch planes landing and taking off while eating, which was pleasant.
I appreciate what they're doing - they made a humdrum airport visit a little bit more memorable than it would otherwise have been.
Favorite Dish: We had a pasta dish with cream and salmon, which was tastier than I'd expected, and a fried meat dish. Both were fairly priced and of a good portion size.
Pizzeria, cafe and restaurant "Lira" is romantic corner situated less then 200m from the Main Square. It offers pleasant ambience with the walls lined by wooden panels and covered by the pictures of Zagreb filmed in the beginnings of the 19th century.

Situated in the very heart of the city, right opposite to the Cathedral, Katedralis has nice ambiance and one of the most beautiful city terraces. (Btw katedrala is Croatian name for cathedral). Restaurant Katedralis offers selection of various meals and desserts of local and international cuisine, grill specialities, fish and crabs.
Open daily from 7am to 11pm
Favorite Dish: To those who never tasted it I would suggest meals prepared in baker's oven or on roasting-spit.
I prefer natural and simple food, like pork fillets served with roast potatoes, it is daily fresh and delicious.
If you're a fan of mexican food, this is the place to go. It is situated in the Savska street, 15-20 minutes from the centre of the city, but it's worth travelling. Original wooden interior and music together with great food explain why this is the most popular mexican restaurant in town. Sometimes it gets too crowded, but you can avoid that by making a reservation.
Favorite Dish: I adore fajitas de pollo- chicken slices with vegetables, served with rice, cheese, tortillas and sauces, but also all kinds of tortillas are really good.

2. Bouillabaisse (mediterranian fish soup with saffron and krostino from leafy dough)
3. Stir fried crispy duck (fried duck with vegetables buckwheat pasta)
4. Maltagliati (hand made, along the adriatic capesante shells amd zucchini)

Before I have been Zagreb I read some tips about Zagreb Restaurants and decided to try one of them called Boban. Its so close to main square at Gajeva Street ( car etrance prohibitted to this street ) Find the hotel Dubrovnik , take this hotel on your left side , 20 meter after you are in Boban. This restaurant has two flooer. Restaurant is at the down stairs. Tha atmosphere is so warm. Smoking is available most part of the restaurant. On the other hand the service is little bit late. ( same as all popular rests. ) The Basement of the Boban is CAFEE & BAR ( see 2nd foto ) . I highly recommend this Bar also.
You'll find some really good mexican food in the city, 3 restaurants in the closer center (one in Frankopanska, one in Savska and one in Jurisiceva) offer a really good atmosphere and really good food, for a bit too much money though. That's, as far as I'm aware, the top of the international food offer in Zagreb - international food restaurants still didn't leave much of a trace here...
Favorite Dish: Hm, I'm the chimichanga type, that food is so good in those restaurants... But you'll find plenty of other types. And of course, beware, all of these restaurants charge the snacks that they give out before the main dish. You'll get them on the table and if you dig in, it's approximately 10 kn per person (1,20euro).
Located in the centre of Zagreb, on Teslina (Nikola Tesla’s)street, this is one lovely restaurant serving good food for reasonable price.
They claim to be Italian restaurant. Well, it is hard to tell the difference - through thousands of years of mixing different influences, these dishes are actually more like our traditional cooking, which evolved under many influences, also Italian.
Who cares as long as it's yummy, right?
So here is the menue:
Carpaccio (raw fresh fish filets) - 8 EUR
Marinated anchovies - 6 EUR
Grilled Tuna - 9 EUR
Adriatic Squid - 90 k12 EUR
Fish - per kilo - 45 EUR
Boiled beef - 7,5 EUR
Vegetable stew with meat balls 7,5 EUR
Turkey filet - 10 EUR
Beef filet with fresh vegetables - 12 EUR
(prices from October 2003)
This Mexican restaurant is located in the very heart of Zagreb. But it's not easy to find it because it's not in the street but in the yard.
Well, lucky me, I had Zdenka :))
That's there that I first met Roland aka luvcroatia. So it was Mexican spicy dinner for international company.
Favorite Dish: Chicken wings
We went to a great place in the centre of town overlooking the main square. Good food and very reasonable.
restaurant -piano bar paviljon
very good place with piano bar, but expensive and not a so good qualitity in cooking
