On the eastern side of the Donji Grad lie 3 contiguous parks or squares. The northernmost is Trg Nikole Subića Zrinjskog, and it contains a bandstand. In the middle is Strossmayerov trg, which holds a statue of Strossmayer and the Galerija Starih Majstora (Old Masters Gallery). The one at the southern end in front of the railway station is Tomislavov Trg and contains the Umjetnički Paviljon (Art Pavilion). They are all lovely public spaces, and great to sit down in and watch the world (and the locals) pass by, or for a sandwich lunch. Then of course you can visit the two galleries as well. My hotel was around the corner, so I was in these squares several times. Address: Donji Grad, ZagrebDirections: Just north of railway station.

Another mouthful in Croat. Translates as the "Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary". Almost as bad in English. Confusingly (as things can be in this part of the world) it also seems to be known as Katedrala Sv Stjepana - Cathedral of St Stephen It was founded in 1093 and the original construction completed in 1242. After that the Tartars spent 21 years trying to destroy it during sieges of the city. In 1624 it was all but destroyed by fire. In 1645 - more fire damage. It was rebuilt and then badly damaged again in 1880 - the earthquake this time. It has been in a period of renovation since 1990 as can be seen in the photos. The Archbishop's Palace is adjacent, as are 2 defence towers dating from 1469 (then part of fortifications against Turkish attacks). In front is an 1850 column topped by statue of Mary with 4 angels. Address: Kaptol 13, Zagreb, HrvatskaDirections: Uphill a bit in north east direction from Trg Bana J. Jelačića.

the street - stretching and yawning by iaint This is an institution. It is a street running south-north in the Gornji Grad which is full of bars, cafes and restaurants. In summer (in the evening especially) it is full of locals (and the occasional tourist) walking up and down, or sitting enjoying a beer, a coffee or dinner. Great for people watching, relaxing etc. My picture was taken (deliberately) at 11am when it is quiet. That way you can see the buildings. An evening shot would just have shown a mass of people! Address: Tkalcićeva ulica, Zagreb, HrvatskaDirections: The southern end of the street starts in the north west corner of Trg Bana J. Jelačića - the main town square.

exterior by iaint That title is quite a mouthful. Try "Croatian Museum of Naive Art". Better? Very interesting exhibition housed in an attractive building in the upper town. However, it is not big (88 items I think, in 4-5 rooms) so you will not spend as much as an hour there. Go in while you are walking round the upper town. Inexpensive at 20kn. I enjoyed it - different. I'm not going to try to explain the genre! Have a look at the website. Address: Ulica sv Ćirila i Metoda 3, Zagreb.Phone: +385 1 48 15 911Directions: In the Gornji grad, just downhill from St Mark's.Website: www.hmnu.org

The "Stone Gate" was one of the 4 original entries into the Gornji Grad. The other have all gone (fires or earthquakes again). It dates from 1760. A chapel has been built around a painting of Mary and child which survived the fire which destroyed the original gate. Address: Kamenita bb, ZagrebDirections: As you enter the Gornji Grad from Radičeva

A Zagreb icon and the heart of the old town. Go see! The roof tiling and restoration are fabulous. The tiles represent the coats of arms of Slavonia, Dalmatia and Croatia. Not much of the original church (from 1256) are left – fires and earthquakes have seen to that. The church is in front of the Croatian parliament building, with the president’s palace on the other side of the square. Address: Trg svetov Marka, Zagreb, CroatiaDirections: It is in the upper town, and well signposted.

Meštrović is regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century – a buddy of Rodin - and after his death his house became the home to part of his collected works. The house is 17th century, and worth seeing on its own. Although you have over 100 items to see, an hour is enough but it’s worth the effort.. The house is in the old town, so probably you’ll be in the vicinity anyway. 30HRK for entry (less than Ł4). Address: Mletačka 8, ZagrebPhone: +385 1 485 1123Directions: In the Gornji Grad

Strossmartre is the longest "street" festival in Zagreb, held on the Strossmayer promenade on the Upper town, it lasts from 01.-30. 06. It's a festival that consists of free concerts, movies and some unusual treats (like choosing the best mongrel dog!!!). Also, this is the place to celebrate Half New Year Day. The atmosphere is great; sitting on the benches, listening to some good music or watching an oldie-but-goldie movie projected on the Lotrscak Tower and having a good glass of gemisht (white wine mixed with water) is really good fun in the Zagreb's summer time. Leave a Comment Address: Strossmayerovo setaliste (promenade)Directions: Upper town, next to Lotrscak Tower
