The skyscraper is a well-known landmark of the city of Zagreb. Everyone knows it & everyone remembers it - even what it was like before. I remember my mum taking me shopping when I was a little kid & when we'd be done with shopping, she'd take me to the penthouse for an ice cream... The picture of it is gonna stay somewhere in my head forever, I think. The skyscraper got closed sometime during the war & I still don't know what's happening with it. I've heard that an older lady bought it, but she had no plans for it, but I heard nothing about that later. I mean, the building itself is not that special [and most of the people don't like it], but there is something about it. The penthouse was a restaurant & a disco bar before, but now it's just a wreck standing there in the main square. It's construction's fully metal & glass, so after being closed for a while now, it looks really old with all those broken windows & everything. It's just a shame, because it's location's perfect, the view amazing & I'm sure people would re-love it again. Luckily, I saw they're starting with the renovations, so I'm hoping we're gonna have a nice, new & renovated skyscraper by the end of 2006. There are some thoughts about replacing the metal parts with glass, so that it doesn't look that... well, socialistic. Some oppose, but we'll see what happens. At least something's being done! ;) Leave a Comment Address: Ilica 1, basically Trg bana J. Jelačića

The central square in Zagreb is named after a very famous figure in Croatia's history - ban Jelačić, who freed Croatia from the Hungarians. Trg bana Josipa Jelačića or simply Trg is the heart & the meeting point of every person living, working, studying or visiting Zagreb. People, bars, bookstores, pigeons, drunks - whatever you need, you'll find it here. I bet you're even there right now! ;) Leave a Comment Address: Trg bana Josipa JelačićaDirections: All trams lead to Trg - well almost, hehe...

You can get practically everywhere from the Upper Town: - to Tkalčićeva street: you have to pass St. Mark's church & the Kamenita vrata (Stone doors) which made the city boundary centuries ago), pass Kompatscher's George-killing-the-dragon statue, go 20 m up the street, there's a steep staircase leading you directly to a beer place called Melin, where you can rest your soul. I think Melin's the place with the most people during summer (and other seasons). People just grab a beer or something & talk. Btw., I met a lot of people there... It's rather cheap & pretty close (you can enter it from Tkalčićeva street too - it's on the left - there's a little playground too, hehe). - take the little streets from St. Mark's church & get into Mesnička street, that'll lead you to Frankopanska, which will lead you on to the Theatre, Mimara a.s.o. - go upwards from the Main Square, pass the bazaar & get some fruit - it's good for you :) - check out the Cathedral & St. Frank's church a bit more north. There's a park called Opatovina which leads you to Melin again, so there it is! :) Basically whichever direction you go, you'll hopefully run into something interesting! Leave a Comment

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [there's a sculpture of Virgin Mary made by the famous Fernkorn in front of it] was being built in several eras during Zagreb's history, so you can still see the different influences [renaissance, baroque etc.]. A lot of famous people from the Croatian history were baptised, married or burried in here. The towers were built at the bare end of the 19th century, but are being renovated now - for the past few years, to be precise. :) An interesting fact about the cathedral is that one of the towers is one m higher that the other! by polardabar The botanical garden is a five-minute walk from the Central Station, situated right behind the Esplanade hotel. The entrance is free, so you should use the opportunity to check it out. Considering that Croatia has a lot of endemic flora, I believe it's quite a good thing to look into it a bit more. For info on opening hours, details & maps, please check here. Enjoy! I wouldn't advise going there during the night, because it's known as a place where there's all kinds of people... Leave a Comment Address: Marulićev trg 9aPhone: +385 (1) 48 44 002

There are two sculptures showing St. George at the peak of his fight with the Dragon in Zagreb [as far as I know]: one is situated in Radiceva street, right in front of the Stone Doors at the entrance to the Upper town [made by the German sculptor Arthur Kompatscher] & the other one [see photo] on the west side of the Croatian National Theater [HNK]. This sculpture called St. George Killing The Dragon was bought from Anton Dominik Fernkorn, a sculptor from Vienna, by the first Croatian cardinal Juraj Haulik [the interesting thing is that Juraj is the Croatian version of George] & was first situated behind the entrance into the Maksimir park in 1867. After 17 years it was given as a gift to the City & placed on Strossmayer square, where it stayed for another 23 years. It was made out of galvanized tin, but in 1907 it was molten in copper & placed on the Maršal Tito square, where it still stands. The interesting thing about this particular sculpture is that the color of copper gradually changed under the influence of weather, so now it's light green now! Nobody really knows what happened to it, but everyone knows this George is green... Fernkorn has a couple of more sculptures around Zagreb, the most important being the sculpture of our so-called Banus Jelačić [see other photo], situated on the same-named square, the 12-meter-high statue of the Mother of Christ in front of the cathedral & many more... The so-called Džamija by polardabar The ex mosque, which is now exhibition friendly is a perfect spot for having a beer with my buddies & chilling... I used to spend a lot of time there, under those lights & around all those skaters. A while ago there was an exhibition with the best National Geographic photos that was going all around the world & evidently stopped in Zagreb for a while. With its circular inside, the mosque was an extremely appropriate exhibition space. And the photography was amazing, of course. There was also a period of time when parties were held inside, right around the beginning of the trance music era, so beginning of the nineties I'd say... One of the parks - King Tomislav Square by polardabar There are many buildings around the center which might interest people: the Croatian National Theatre [or HNK - Hrvatsko Narodno Kazaliste], the Mimara museum, the Main Train Station & many more, all inside a ten-minute radius from the Main Square. If you have time to go a bit farther from the center, I'd suggest the Mirogoj cemetery which is proclaimed as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe [there are busses leaving in front of the cathedral]. Next stop - the Maksimir park & the Zoo, located 15 minutes by tram from the Main Square [trams direction Dubrava & Dubec - 4, 7, 11 & 12 - remember to buy a ticket! :)] Another good idea might be the Jarun lake (there's the tram no. 17 from the Main Square), where you can take a nice stroll, get a drink or dip your feet in the lake...
