Ban Jelačić square by polardabar The best way to see the Lower Town is by foot. It is easily accessible & you can visit numerous museum & galleries, have a drink or sit in a park. The Art Pavilion, the Strossmayer Gallery & the Archaeological Museum are just some of those you can visit. Last time I was in the Archaeological Museum (since I'm a scientist, hehe...) there was an exhibition about the Vučedol calendar (Vučedol is near Vukovar & is well-known as an archaeological digging-site). Anyway, that calendar has been found a coupld of years years ago & is estimated to be the oldest calendar in Europe - even older than Stonehenge! I'm not sure if the exhibition is held there, but you should be able to find the calendar somewhere... Leave a Comment Address: Donji Grad

by polardabar Ilica is the longest & probably the most famous street in Zagreb! It's filled with all kinds of different shops, from typical Croatian souvenir shops to candy shops, Benetton, Mexx aso. I guess you could say it makes a paradise for shoppers! ;) You can enjoy ice cream & cake in the best pastry shop in the city called Vincek [the address is Ilica 18], grab a drink in one of numerous nearby bars or simply take a walk along [a portion of] this street that goes all the way to the western suburbs! Since I started working in a shop there, I've been seeing it in a completely different light... You just start feeling like a tiny part of the city life, passing there a hunderd times a day, greeting all the people, going through the crowd... Leave a Comment Directions: West of the Main Square

One of the most instantly recognizable symbols of Zagreb, the church of St Mark at Markov Square, Gonji Grad, has these beautiful glazed coloured tiles - the coats of Arms of Croatia Dalmatia Slavonia and Zagreb. Leave a Comment Address: Markov TrgDirections: Gornji Grad / Upper Town - take the funicular ! (see transport tip)

Will they ever finish the cathedral ? by Paisleypaul, 4 more photos This is a wonderful cathedral begun in 1093 and so big that more than 900 years later they are still working on it (honestly -see the scaffolding in my picture :) About 10-15 minutes walk from the central train station, this is located on Bakaceva, and its interior was the most spectacular sight on my short tour of Kaptol Leave a Comment Address: Bakaceva, KaptolDirections: See phot 4 - the view from the central station as you arrive, see the cathedral to the RHS of the picture

Sat by polardabar The clock or sat in Croatian has been a meeting point for Zagreb's citizens for a long time - that was before people started meeting across the rail on the benches at the beginning of Gajeva street. The other important thing is that every day at noon you can hear a deafening noise made by a canon situated in Kula Lotrscak in the Upper Town. It has been making noise every day since 1876 & is very punctual indeed! You can see people walking & adjusting the time on their watches when they hear it! It's almost like it's saying: It's noon - do something! But I think the only people who notice it are poor terrified tourist who must think to themselves that the war is back. ;) Anyway, I was there at the right time, so I took this photo... ;) Leave a Comment Address: Trg bana Josipa Jelacica

Maksimir by andreja20 Numerous parks such as Zrinjevac, Ribnjak, the Botanical Garden and Maksimir with their overwhelmed nature provide a perfect picture of Zagreb. Maksimir is not only Zagreb's largest and most beautiful park, but also of one of the oldest (1794), largest and most beautiful gardens in this part of Europe. The park is so huge that you can easily spend the whole day walking along the lakes, have a picnic or visit the Zoo. Besides the Zagreb Zoo, there's also the Dinamo stadium nearby. Zrinjevac by andreja20 It's a rather large park with many Fontains just in the centre of Zagreb. Walking through the Zrinjevac park, you will find museums, galleries, shopping centres and other sights of this wonderful city. There are many parks in Zagreb, but Zrinjevac is definitely one of the most special ones and due to its great location it just can't be missed. Leave a Comment
