When you hear a loud BANG at noon while walking around the city don't panic. It's only the cannon of Lotrscak Tower. For over 100 years it has been telling the people of Zagreb that it's noon. I waited for the cannon at noon one day so that I can take a picture of the firing cannon. Because of the very loud noise I was too shocked to press the release button of my camera though. And so were the other two guys who were waiting with their cameras. So all you can see on my 2nd picture is a little smoke. I thought for my next try I would need four hands - two to close my ears and two for the camera - but I succeeded eventually in 2007, as you can see on the 1st pic. Leave a Comment

Tourist trap.... in every sense of the word by sabsi Pozor Pozor! This is a tourist trap in every sense of the word: There are some holes in the streets of Zagreb and it's easy to fall when you are not watching your feet. So watch where you are going! OK, I admit it. I fell into this tourist trap myself.... not into the one on the picture of course. But Nikša was so nice to warn me about every possible hole there was ... and his Aloe Vera gel cured my "war wounds" ;) Leave a Comment

by croisbeauty The area in between the bridges across the River of Sava is favourite jogging spot of the locals. Besides, it is one of the city promenades, especially during the weekends. However, it is also favourite spot for those who are adicted to drogs, in particularly under the bridge called most Mladosti, where this picture was taken. Don't ask me to translate what is written. This is the place which ought to be avoid, especially under the dark. Leave a Comment

The new legislation doesn't tolerate any amount of alcohol for the drivers. And that means 0,0‰ The fines are severe and unless you have 60-600 euro and a driving license to spare, you better stick to it no matter how unpopular it may be. Remember, after a single pint of beer it may take you up to 5 hours before alcohol is completely gone from your blood. Leave a Comment

T-Country by sabsi I came to Zagreb shortly after German Telekom had taken over the city. Their rebranding had some serious effects on the city - you couldn't walk for a minute without seeing anything magenta (the T colours). Nikša had warned me that it was bad but I hadn't expected anything this bad... I could even see magenta from the plane! Magenta was everywhere, on billboards, in and on the trams, even at ATM machines. I hope T-Com won't paint the whole country in their colours some day. I bet people know the brand and their colour quite well already... hopefully too well so that they won't use T-products because they are sick of all the advertising ;) Go Vodaphone! ;) Leave a Comment

by acemj Zagreb is a relatively safe place, but it is always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings. Keep in mind that unemployment is fairly high and petty crime does occur. Also, be prepared for drastic weather variances if you are coming from the Croatian coast. Zagreb can be significantly colder. Leave a Comment

dvadeset kuna by IngaA That's what happened to me. The train tickets are sold only round trip. I checked the timetable, my train Budapest-Zagreb was passing by Koprivnica, it was indicated in the train ticket. But on the way back I took a train which passed through another place and it turned to be about 10km longer way. So I had to pay, I suppose, 10 kunas more. But the problem was that on the way back (Zagreb-Budapest-Kyiv it was) I had only 4 kunas and 3 USD. I offered dollars to the controler but it doesn't work. Not that I didn't want to pay, I simply didn't know about this rule. Wel, luckily he let me go without paying, he perhaps understood that I didn't know that, no problem. But who knows what kind of person can check your ticket next time... better to be prepared. So keep some additional kunas with you, just in case. Leave a Comment

Zagreb is an extremely safe city, especially for its size. Even the train station is safe, and free of the usual dregs of society such places often attract. In fact I didn't see any of the typically dodgy looking people you usually find in big cities, even in the parks the benches were filled with couples relaxing, parents with their children, old friends chatting. Only once did I see a guy sleeping on one, and they were tucked away out of sight. I didn't see any drunks, beggars, madmen, hoodlums, or brawlers in two days. It's a world away from Frankfurt, a smaller city, where drunks in the city center sprawl across the street, beggars harrass you at the station, and madmen walk the street shouting at themselves, swearing at young mothers, and banging their fists against their heads. And Frankfurt is very safe. Leave a Comment

Flower croat of arms in Cesarceva ulica by croisbeauty There are many parks in the city area, therefore Zagreb is considering as a green town. There are many flower arrangment all over the town, but do not try to pick up the flowers coz the citizens of Zagreb are very fond of it and you may be warned in unpleasent way not to do that. OOOPS, my car is gone If it happens that your car disappears from the place you remember leaving it, don’t panic at once. Zagreb has a car towing service (popularly called the “spider” ) which towes cars that are misplaced (wrongly parked) to a special location where you can pick them up after paying a fine.
