In general, some Greek street names are exceedingly hard for the uniniated to learn, pronounce and then remember in the case of an emergency. Therefore, it can be handy to write down your address when you arrive in case you have to call for help.

If something happened at home rather than call the ambulance I would likely go across the street to where the fire department is and ask for assistance from the paramedic and/or have them call the ambulance for me. Therefore, if you have a chance keep your eyes open for any police or fire stations or hospitals that might be conveniently located near where you are staying.

    alien registration certificate
    by MrBill
After nine months in Cyprus I did not have a residence permit; I did not have a work permit; I did not have a Cypriot driver's license; and I did not have a Cyprus bank account. They only thing they let me do was pay Cyprus taxes. I was in Cyprus on a tourist visa, which lasts from one to three months depending on where you are from. Each time I re-entered the country the meter started from zero again. I was on a working vacation so to speak.

Finally the slow wheels of officialdom started turning, and I was able to get my temporary residence permit and my alien registration certificate.

In order to apply, I needed a valid work contract for at least one year; letters of reference; certified copies of my various degrees and diplomas; a recent copy of my police record; and a bank reference. In my case, my application was vetted by the National Bank of Cyprus and the Cyprus Securities Commission to decide whether or not I was suitable to work in Cyprus before my application was forwarded along to the immigration authorities.

I needed to have blood samples taken, which were tested for AIDS/HIV, and x-rays taken to check for cancer, tumors and TB.

I also had to post a bond in case they needed to deport me. Being a Canadian, they wanted CYP 500 because they would have to send me a long way. However, I told them I still had a valid German residence permit so they would only have to send me as far as Germany. They settled for a CYP 300 bond for 18-months.

I swear they just make this stuff up as they go along, but at least now I have my paperwork in order. It must be time to move-on then? ; - )

When in Cyprus, consider getting a pay card for your cellphone, called "soeasy", the charges are the lowest in Europe. If you use telephone more than very little and if your stay is more than a week, it may be cheaper to use your cellphone with the local card than the hotel's services.
SMS cost around 0.02 euro each.
    For more information :

PS. the soeasy cards are popular with turkish cypriots as well, they can be used in nothern Nicosia as well but there is no coverage beyond the Pentadaktylos mountains (the nothern coast).

Looking at this mountains called five fingers or (penta daktilo) in Greek.
They seem to change colour as the day progesses...

From the first day I noticed those mountain ranges I had fallen in love with them.
We as kids always took some trip there secretly from our parents.

    Crossing the Green Line

  • There are a lot of misconceptions about crossing the Green Line. In fact it is fairly straight forward if you know a couple of things :

There are five crossing points (from west to east) :

    Astromeritis (near Morphou)
    Agios Dometios (in Nicosia)
Ledra Palace (in Nicosia - only for pedestrians)
    Pyla (near Larnaca)
    Agios Nikolaos (near Famagusta)

The check points are open 24 hours a day (except Astromeritis which closes at 7pm)

When you come to the Turkish check point, first get temporary insurance for your car (if driving) and then fill out a "visa form" and hand both to the border guard. He will then enter your particulars into a computer and stamp the visa paper (not your passport). Don't loose the visa slip as you will need it upon leaving.

You may stay in the North essentially for as long as you like. When coming back you may bring back goods worth 135 Euros, as well as 40 Cigarettes and 1 litre of alcohol.

If you are an EU-citizen you may cross the Green Line regardless of point of entry to Cyprus. Iif you are not, and especially if you are from a non-western country, you are likely to get fined or arrested by Greek Cypriot authorities if you have entered the island via a North Cypriot airport or harbour.

Rental cars may sometimes be taken across, but inquire with the rental company beforehand.

    Just an unknown willage.
    by benazer, 2 more photos
If it was posible to taste and smell history I would have smelled it when I gazed down from a hiltop ,the willage looks as if it is sleeping , the shade of the hill beginning to cover the willage as aftrnoon closes in,soon it will be pitch dark and a billion stars will shine as they diid for always.

Fondest of all my memories in Cyprus is the smell in the air of a million different plants and flowers and trees and the sound of insects at night.

  • Keo Beer - Cyprus
    Keo Beer
    by grayfo
This is brewed in Lemesos, in Greek Cyprus. The brewery motto is: 'Be Happy and Drink Well' - an epithet I heartedly agree with. It is styled in the pilsner vein and in 1987 won the brewing industry world bottled lager competition Gold Medal. It is sweet and malty on the nose (honey?), though this is very subdued. It is lively on the palate. The faintly sweet malt character carries through to the mouth, where it lasts into the light, fruity, lemony finish. There is also a subtle resiny quality to the beer. Hops are discernible but not prominent. While not overpowering and narrowly avoiding blandness, this is a very refreshing though slightly cloying beer from a very hot part of the Mediterranean.

    Alc 4.5% vol.

Visit the archeological museums in all towns. As famous archeologists say Cyprus is one of the few places on earth that passed through all stages of life. Khirokitia where this stone bowl was found was one of the eldest residential aerias found. It is located next to the Limassol-Nicosia high-way. This bowl is from the NEOLITHIC period.

If you have a family you can go to Ayia Napa and protaris and there is a magnificent water park at this end of the island. Trips to Isreal and Egypt can be taken from limasol. Paphos is better for driuving into the mountains and has generally more cultural sites.

Driving up to the kykhos monestry on unchartered roads in a suzuki vitara. There was a 1000 metre drop on the right hand side of the car and no safety barrier, it was a little bit scary. The magnificent church at kykos with its gold every where. Also driving back in a car full of water as we had no roof and while in the monestary there had been a thunderstorm and the jeep was full of water.

Platres in the mountains is a welcolm relief from the 90 degree heat that you get in cyprus.
