This photo was taken from our hotel balcony. Along the shore there is a wooden boardwalk for miles in either direction. While we were there, work was underway to complete it all the way into Limassol’s town centre.

Cyprus and its people may still have a chance to find a solution to the island's troubled political division. The United Nations recently released peace plan for the unification of the island give hope for 80.000 Greek cypriots, about half of the total refugees, that they may return to their homes. The Turkish Cypriot minority, on the other hand, will be able to enjoy full sovereign control of the island's north and equal representation in the island's political system. For the moment the Turkish Cypriot leader has rejected the plan, but allowed Greeks and Turks to visit each other for the first time in 29 years.Let's wait and see.... May be Elektra will be able to get her parents' home back...

As a very amatuer geologist, I found Cyprus rich in places to visit. A fond memory at the time, but I can't say that it is now - was a visit to the asbestos mine at Amiandos, about 5km East of Troodos. We had a prior arrangement for a guided tour of the mine, and went one Saturday. As you can see from the photo, it was cold, and very overcast. Did you know that asbestos - as used for roofing sheets, brake linings for cars and so on - comes from a rock? The mineral Chrysotile is common in Cyprus. If you find a piece you will see veins of fibres running through it. Scratch these fibres in one direction and they remain hard as the rock, but scratch across the fibres and they become fluffy and soft. We visited the mine before the dangers of asbestos fibres were widely known to the public, and what a dusty place it was. The rock was excavated, and fed into the top of a large building, as...

We used to get out into the countryside as much as we could. Pano Kividhes is one of a number of abandoned villages, but when we were there its church was in a good state of repair, although my guide book at the time says;'The village church dedicated to St George is of the eighteenth century, and is doomed to destruction; indeed at the present it is being pulled down, etc'. I wonder? The village was in a state of decay, and I imagine this was due to ground movement, and not 'conflict'. There were several large earthenware olive oil jars amongst the ruins, and I used to wonder how I could get one home to UK - a little too big to go into a suitcase, though

Cyprus is a fantastic place, but you do need to get out into the countryside, and away from the beaches! Having said that, a favourite pastime was to go the the beach near Evdhimou, lay on your back and just float on the warm, still water. The sea does have its moods, and can be rough at times.

The island used to be divided into a Greek and a Turkish part. The border was almost as heavily guarded as the former Iron Curtain dividing the Germanies. No more so - the border has been opened, and travelling between to the Turkish part has now become possible.

Don't worry about it raining on your vacation, as they nearly always have blue skys. The water is blue and clean, too. Here I am in the Torres Mountains where they have snow skiing in the winter. The air is great, and I was told it has a very high level of ozone. Hey, let's bottle it and sell it to other places in the world!

Kyrenia city has a very unique past. Settlement in Kyrenia goes back to neolithic times. The name of the city is referred to as 'Kerevnia' which means Aphrodite by King of Salamis. During Phoenicians time the city became a trade city. Kyrenia during Roman Empire times was Christian even before Christianity had become the official religion of the Roman Empire. During Lousignan times the region was divided into feudal estates.

A view from Salamis Ruins in Famagusta in North Cyprus. According to the Greek mythology, the city of Salamis was founded by Teucer on his return from the Trojan war. Salamis city is supposed to have been a higly developed city blending the cultures of Orient and Phonecians.During Roman Empire the city was destroyed due to many earthquakes. It was restored again, but after the Arabs destroyed the city again. That was the end of the settlement here.
