Cypriot Weddings

by cheekymarieh

I was also fortunate to attend a traditional Cypriot wedding and attend the reception in the village of Dherynia afterwards. The Orthodox service was a fascinating cultural experience in itself. You will discover that you have to stand through the whole service.A recent trip to Nicosia also provided me with another opportunity to sample their weddings.

One of the best things about Ayia Napa is the beaches and there are a lot to choose from, although during peak season they can get very crowed. The most popular/fashionable beach to go to in Ayia Napa is Nissi Beach although Makronissos beach near the Dome Hotel is catching up popularity wise (and in my opinion is the nicer beach), although it somewhat further from the centre of resort.

Legend and reality always...

by TheaIren

Legend and reality always blend together in Cyprus, an island small in size and population ( 650,000 inhabitants ), but great in history and cultural tradition. I miss the warmth and sun because it is winter and so cold in estonia right now.

Visit the archeological museums in all towns. As famous archeologists say Cyprus is one of the few places on earth that passed through all stages of life. Khirokitia where this stone bowl was found was one of the eldest residential aerias found. It is located next to the Limassol-Nicosia high-way. This bowl is from the NEOLITHIC period.

If you have a family you can go to Ayia Napa and protaris and there is a magnificent water park at this end of the island. Trips to Isreal and Egypt can be taken from limasol. Paphos is better for driuving into the mountains and has generally more cultural sites. Driving up to the kykhos monestry on unchartered roads in a suzuki vitara. There was a 1000 metre drop on the right hand side of the car and no safety barrier, it was a little bit scary. The magnificent church at kykos with its gold every where. Also driving back in a car full of water as we had no roof and while in the monestary there had been a thunderstorm and the jeep was full of water.Platres in the mountains is a welcolm relief from the 90 degree heat that you get in cyprus.

Festivals

by cheekymarieh

Try and make sure your trip coincides with one of the major festivals such as Easter or the Festival of the Flood. They make such a colourful addition to your trip and give you a view of the real Cyprus as opposed to the tourist side. I had a fantastic time in the village of Pomos one Easter. We were invited to spend some time there with my Greek friends grandparents. We had the opportunity to sample real Cypriot Easter food cooked in the time honoured way - in the outside ovens. We ate traditional Easter dishes. This was Cypriot hospitality at its best. When it comes to feeding people, the Cypriots tend to cater for at least double the number of people they are expecting ... and then they keep piling it on you.

remember that this island has a very far-back reaching history.Cyprus: A brief historyHistory in Cyprus dates as far back as 7000 BC, the Neolithic Age, with settlements along the north and south coasts of the island.After1400 BC, the first Greeks came to the island, Mycenaen merchants, who started the Hellenisation of the island. By 1050 BC Cyprus can be considered a Greek island, with the language, culture and religion of Greece well established. Cyprus has ten city-kingdoms and by 800 BC it is a flourishing and prosperous country. From 750 BC Cyprus is conquered several times by Assyria, Egypt and Persia. In 333 BC Alexander the Great claims Cyprus for part of his empire. Cyprus continues to be part of the Hellenist Empire until 58 BC. In 58 BC Cyprus becomes part of the Roman Empire. Saint Paul is converted to Christianity whilst in Cyprus and Cyprus becomes the first country...

Cyprus is wonderful, I...

by Flona

Cyprus is wonderful, I completely recommend staying in Paphos, a lot of the historical sites are based around here, making it easy to explore. Things to do1) Visit the tomb of the kings2) Visit the mosaics located in an old crumbled village, which is nice to walk around, there is still the ampitheatre and lighthouse there, and you have beautiful views of the sea from the top.3) On the way into Paphos town, on the right is some caves in which persecuted christians hid, explore these, it's amazing to see where they take you, and that people actually lived here.4) Go to the market - it's ok, but there's a lovely view of Paphos harbour from the top, which is worth making the trip for.5) Have a brandy sour by Paphos Harbour watching the sunset.6) Take a break on Coral beach, it's very clean with lovely clear, warm water for swimming. Cypriots were so lovely and friendly, my favourite memory...

Paphos&The Trodos Mtns....

by Bec.

Paphos&The Trodos Mtns. Beachs swimming, snorkeling, diving. If you are able to get permission,To the Northside of the Island, however it is under unauthorized occupation of the Turks. You'll need to return by 5pm or leave the Island by way of the North. You won't be able to return to the unoccupied portion if you have a stamp from Turkey. The last two days befor I left,I came across some sea caves in route to Coral Bay.They're very isolated from the main road.Rent a 4wheel drive & go exploring off the beaten paths! There's much more to see if you do.I wish I had done so ealier.
