    Getting around Girne...

by Profsmiley Updated Nov 23, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Getting around Kyrenia is easy - if you are staying close to the marina (old harbor), then you can almost walk to all the attractions in the city.

If not, the hotels provide shuttles to city center, serving with short intervals.

Then there is always the public bus or taxi option. The taxi fares are not exactly cheap but not be well worth in the middle of the night, or for out-of-the-way destinations.

Here is a map of the city that points out main locations.

Have in mind that to enter Kyrenia marina via yacht you have to go through immigration and customs procedures.

In case you of having along pets, a veterinary officer will be called for quarantine purposes.

It is highly advisable to contact the port beforehand to avoid delays and misunderstandings.

The cheapest option to travel to the north of Cyprus is by Pegasus Airlines.

After travelling 4 or 5 times with the Turkish Airlines I have to admit that I found the service and food excellent.

Nicosia to Girne/Kyrenia or vice versa.

by alectrevor Updated Oct 1, 2009

A taxi direct to Nicosia costs about 50 TL ( £20 ) or a dolmus ( mini bus ) costs 3.50 TL (£1.40 ) The dolmus goes to and from near the Kyrenia gate in north Nicosia. I found that the taxi was best on arriving on the island to go straight to Nicosia, but returning the dolmus was good enough.

    Hydrofoil

by alectrevor Updated Oct 1, 2009

The hydrofoil port is a little way from Kyrenia town so i took a taxi which are cheap on meter. The hydrofoil was timed to leave at 09-30, but the north Cyprus passport/customs only had one man on check out. At 10-50 we were still sat waiting to set off, then about a hundred men (i noticed 1 woman) stormed off the the ferry chanting and shouting in protest, in 10 minutes we were on our way. On arrival at Tasucu there were 5 passport check places., through in moments. This crossing was flat calm, but the stretch of sea can be rough., as i found out going. At this point in time this is the only regular sea crossing to any part of Cyprus. So if you are going from Europe to south Cyprus, this is the way , through Turkey to north Cyprus and cross to south. Otherwise fly. The Hydrofoil ( day ) and ferry (night ) are all year round from Girne/Kyrenia to Tasucu and a hydrofoil from Alanya May to Sept.

    to saint hilarion/bellapais

    by call_me_rhia Updated Feb 2, 2008

It's fairly easy to getto bellapais and saint hilarion... In both cases you can take a taxi, and it won't cost you a fortune. To bellapais all taxis use a meter, so you'll know you'll be paying the correct price. Once you are over there, and have visited the abbey, just ask around if anyone is willing to take you to saint hilarion castle, and negotiate a price.

It costed us 20 turkish liras to get there, and the taxi arranged for us to come back in a couple of hours to pick us up - eithe himself or a friend, he said. His friend came very punctual. Saint Hilarion is located about half-way between Girna and Nicosia, and then still another bit over winding mountain roads and past some army trainig camps and shooting ranges. Considering the distance, the price was very correct.

    Getting to Girne

by Assenczo Updated Mar 17, 2015

Girne is wonderful but one has to get there first. Due to the peculiar status of the island and all the claims, counter claims and the respective politicking connected to them it is so difficult to get to Girne if the entry point into the island is on the Greek side. It involves carrying one’s bags while walking considerable distance between the two points where a taxi would leave the visitor on the Greek side and another one where he would be picked up on the Turkish side. This could amount to a kilometre of walking at least, which makes it highly undoable especially if a luggage larger than a hand bag is involved. Best way to visit the town is a day trip from Nicosia - limiting but well-worth-it option. Entering Cyprus from Turkey turns the tables completely but this “belligerent” act puts the foreigner into a position not to be able to visit the Greek part of the island since one has entered into Cyprus through illegal point according to the “southerners”. Things are not that easy even nowadays despite the appearance of accessibility.

    Bus from Nicosia to kyrenia

    by Avieira67 Written Mar 31, 2014

There are many buses a day linking these cities. They depart from Kyrenia Gate at North Nicosia and arrive at Kyrenia station near the Ottoman Cemetry.
One way ticket costs 4.5 TL while a return ticket costs 8.0 TL.
The trip takes about 35 minutes.

Kyrenia Transportation

Local Buses run daily but they are not that reliable as they may not be always on time. If you are not in any hurry, I recommend them because the fare is cheap and it is a way to mix with locals...
