This place is a real gem, and I lunch here most days when I'm in Larnaca. The menu (see photo) consists predominantly of toasted sandwiches which are absolutely excellent and extremely good value. As you can see from the second photo, they will make a sandwich out of most anything and one of these huge things is more than enough to keep you going throught the day.

Certainly the place is not flash, you sit either inside at formica tables or outside, at the roadside on plastic chairs, but the atmosphere is great.

Dimitri (Jimmy) and his lovely wife Fadoulla have a loyal following, and a lot of British expats hang out here at lunchtime. At £2:50 for a toasted sandwich and a large Keo beer, it really is the best lunch deal in town.

By the way, if you don't read Greek, the sign merely says Dimitri's coffee shop.

My favourite is the roasti (home-cooked roast pork) with a little onion and piccalilli - simply gorgeous.

This tavern is on mackenzie Beach on the edge of Larnaca to the south. Service was good. The fish dishes came in order of size: shrimps; pieces of fried fish; calamari; octopus; squid cooked in its ink; red mullet; a slightly larger grey fish; then a white fleshed fish cut open.
Fortunately there were also some salads and mezze as i am not a great fish eater.
Dessert wa water melon, gala melon and cherries.

    The salad.
But there were no complaints from my colleagues who devoured everything, especially the calamari.

The cafe is on the promenade. It has both inside and outside seating. Outside is shaded and there is interesting decor and paintings are on display.
The food was good and the service friendly.

    The children enjoyed their pasta.

Our first meal in Cyprus was in this restaurant, and I must say it was the best meal we had during our entire trip. The restaurant is cosy, with many tables outside in the garden, under trees with colorful and perfumed flowers. Unpretentios but cosy.

The menu is quite limited, and specializes in meats. I ordered a chicken kebab, which was grilled on charcoals to perfection - and it was a huge plate...I think I only managed to eat half of it. My husband had lamb, cooked in psecial ovens that you can see - and he said it was delicious, too.

  • Ouzerie Skala, Larnaca, Cyprus. - Larnaca
    Ouzerie Skala, Larnaca,
    Cyprus.
    by planxty
The previous time I was in Larnaca, this place was an old semi-derelict workshop in a row of similar buildings, but my word has it changed now. It is the Ouzerie Skala. An ouzerie, as you may guess, was traditionally a place which sold ouzo (an aniseed type Greek spirit) as well as food. Nowadays, food tends to be more the order of the day, and this place excels in it. The name derives from the old colloquial name for Larnaca.

The restaurant has been beautifully designed, including a small intimate upstairs eating area, and the waiter (I only saw one) is very friendly and speaks English. I visited with my (Cypriot) girlfriend and other Cypriot friends who all pronounced the food excellent, which must be some kind of praise. Indeed, I saw very few tourists in the place, the majority of the clientele being locals. I suppose, being new, it hasn't made it into the guidebooks yet.

The great thing for me, being a bit of a musician, was that there is live music every night, a lovely old chap playing bouzouki (actually a selection of different sized ones). Again, my Cypriot companions told me that the music was very authentic (mostly old tunes) and there was even a bit of impromptu dancing done at other tables. There are also a couple of very nice semi-acoustic guitars, expressly there for diners to play should they feel so inclined. Your humble VT correspondent was prevailed upon for a couple of tunes!

By the way, if you are not an ouzo fan, there is a full selection of other drinks available. The restaurant only opens in the evening which accounts for it being shuttered in my photo.

    Absolutely recommended.

Very difficult to say, as I had a wonderful speciality kebab one evening, but, if pushed, I owuld have to select the lamb chops. Four huge succulent lamb chops, barbecued to perfection and served with rice, salad and potatoes - absolutely delicious.

It seemed that everything was closed in the city at that late hour (22.00) but we were hungry. We asked at the Taxi piazza for any ideas. A kind driver suggested we went to the Black Turtle: "We take the Olympic Airlines crues there". Ok, lets go there.

And here it is, an old house (we had to go along the small road twice to notice the place), we went in and then upstairs. Tortoiseshells all over the walls. Greek music and local people having real fun. Ok, it seems good, where are the menus?

No menus. The plates started arriving after a while, without us to order. "What's going on?" we were wondering looking around to see if there was a wedding celebration maybe and waiters thought we were invited too. No, not such thing, there was no mistake, this was the way it was. You get in, you get served a great variety of local "meze". Everything was so tasty that we felt gratefulness that we didn't have to choose, we wouldn't have known what to choose and we would have missed all these great tastes.

People on the table next to us were so friendly, treated us to some KEO local beers, we returned the favor and there we were dancing altogether "hasaposerviko" dance.

We had a great evening. I recommend it to anyone who want to tast real cypriot mezes and have a nice time in a cosy environment.

Spinach-rice. No joke. I hate it at home but this tasted like velvet.

  • I'm not lovin it, I'm lovin Pizza Hut more! - Larnaca
I'm not lovin it, I'm lovin
    Pizza Hut more!
    by Trillian2005, 1 more photos
Although McDonald's motto is "I'm lovin it" and it was right next to my hotel, I must say I prefer Pizza Hut. In other words: I'm lovin it more!

I had the "Greek Pizza", with olives, bell peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, and feta cheese, and Mediterranean spice. It was healthful, vegetarian, and yumsville. I ordered a small pizza because I thought that would satisfy my appetite, but the pizza was so good that I wished I had ordered at least a medium. I love pizza - and I have no idea why pizza is considered junk or fast food. The art of pizza is definitely not something to be compared to McDonald's double whopper.

We had a lunch at this restaurant, which was adequate but it was the brandy which made it memorable. Derek said it was the best he had tasted!

We thought we had bought a bottle of the same Brandy, Sadly not...................We shall have to return!

I ate my best swordfish ever in Larnaka. The restaurant was one on the promenade by the sea, but I don't remember it's name. My companion ate kleftiko (some sheep dish) and was very hapy with it too.

    Swordfish it is!
