The construction was completed in September 1988, and it is the largest of a network of 107 dams on the island.
Water here is collected by the rivers Kouris, Limnatis and Kyros. Furthermore, water from Diarizos river is diverted to this dam, via a 14.5 km long connecting tunnel.
As I am driven from the village of Lofou to Limassol,I have the chance to pass by this beautiful dam, and I am told that the whole village of Alassa had to be relocated to a nearby site overlooking the reservoir, somewhere between the valley of Kouris and Limnatis. Environmental groups opposed to this construction back then, as they were concerned about the effects of water diversion on the Limassol Salt Lake, - a wetland located downstream to the rivers and used by migratory birds. The dam is part of the Southern conveyor project that carries water from the south west to the south east part of the island, over a distance of 120 km. It provides a water storage volumn of 115 cubic metres.
As I am driven from the village of Lofou to Limassol, I notice that there are some very beautiful places for a picnic.
So, enjoy the beautiful countryside by the river bank of Kouris river.
