    Kolossi Castle

by greekcypriot Updated May 21, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The castle is set amongst a fertile valley to the mouth of the river Kouris. It is an imposing structure which is sympathetically restored giving an authentic feel for what life must have been like in its heyday.

The castle itself is a fine example of military architecture and a construction of the 13th century.

    Now *that's* some tent!

    by atw26 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Just off the highway, past Zygi, you'll see a teepee like structure inland. This is the Kalavasos Tenta. Interestingly, the place was known as Tenta before the tent like structure was erected.

The structure is to protect the mud-brick Neolithic structures excavated there. The print version of the Cyprus Tourism Organization's handbook on Cyprus would have you believe that this site is not open to the public. However, it is indeed open but only Mon-Fri up until 16.00. Entry fee is CYP0.75.

    Summer plays under night skies

    by atw26 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Don't pass up a chance to see a performance (held during the summer) in this ancient site. Originally built in 2nd century BC the amphitheatre has been restored.

It really is a special view - situated on a hill, looking outward to sea, and watching the sunset as you wait for the play to start. The full moon on the evening that I was there watching a Shakespearean play completed the magic.

    Lofou Village

by greekcypriot Updated Apr 2, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You will feel like stepping out of the present Cyprus and getting into the past. The village is listed by UNESCO as an architecturally important village, and even if it was abandoned in the past, the villagers are returning and restoring their homes with the original character and style.

It is just 20’ drive from Limassol and on the opposite direction towards the mountains it is also very near the Troodos range.

I recommend a visit here and why not spend a couple of days in the beautiful Agro tourism houses in the village!

Visit Erimi and see the Wine Museum

by greekcypriot Written Mar 26, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As I was writing my guide on my previous trip to Cyprus and after visiting a number of Wineries and followed the wine routes in both Paphos and Limassol and the Troodos Mountains, I discovered that the actual Wine Museum is in the village of Erimi.

So, for this reason I arranged to visit it on this trip and I can assure that it was worth it.
Apparently Cyprus is the craddle of European wines- so just the right place for me!

Using traditional and contemporary methods the museum presents a journey through centuries of the wine history of the island.

Ancient jars and vases, medieval drinking vessels and all these from the private collection of Anastasia (an acquaintance of mine from the choir) the owner of the Museum.

Photographic backdrops and audiovisual equipment bring all aspects of wine making to life, from cultivation to production.

After a short introduction you can taste some of the local wines and of course buy a bottle or two!

    Ancient Greek Theatre

by christosl Written May 19, 2007

The ancient city of Kourion, where are baths (fifth century B.C.), fine pavement mosaics, the theater (A.D. 50-175; performances of music and drama-ancient dramatists and a Temple of Apollo.

This is an important ancient city-kingdom and one of the most spectacular archeological sites on the island. The magnificent Greco-Roman theater was originally built in the second century B.C. by the Greeks and extended by the Romans. The seating was also moved back to protect spectators from the animals that were brought in to fight the gladiators. The theater is now used for musical and theatrical performances.

    visit Lefkera

by uglyscot Written Jun 11, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Even if you are not interested in buying lace or silver, Lefkera is an attractive village to wander around. There are narrow streets with lovely houses made of the characteristic limestone. Some small alleys lead to arched doorways, and flowers add to the scene.
