by sukiesue

When visiting Cyprus you will soon be made aware of the Cyrpriotic problem and the division of this country. Cyprus, though an island in comparison to the surrounding countries, was destined to play a very important role in the history of man- kind. This was bound to be so since the island is located in the centre of the ancient world which is known as the cradle of western civilisation. Asia Minor is only 40 miles away and the Syrian coast only 60 from the easternmost tip of the Karpass peninsula. Egypt and the Aegean sea are 240 miles apart. Therefore it was only natural that a great civilisation flowered in Cyprus beginning as early as the 8th millennium BC, when stone was the only material used either for weapons or utensils. The discovery of copper which occurred in the 3rd millennium marked the turning point in the history of the island which gradually turned it into a bone of...

by cryogenic

The water and sewerage system in Cyprus is different to that of some other countries. When using the toilets, there are bins provided for waste paper, as the waste pipes get clogged up if toilet roll is put down them. Takes a bit of getting used to.

The political division of the island since the Turkish invasion of the north in 1974 is a very emotive issue with Greek Cypriots. Many of the people you meet are refugees from the north who had to leave their lands and most of their belongings behind when they fled to the south. Please be sensitive to this if you are discussing politics. The 'Green Line' patroled by UN peace-keeping troops divides the Greek Cypriot south from the Turkish controlled north. The photo shows the 'ghost town' of Famagusta, once the largest resort in the Middle east,in the distance.

RELIGION IN CYPRUS : The location of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean gives it special religious significance. The island is a treasure trove of religious icons, mosaics and artifacts, as well as ecclesiastical architecture, because religion, which has played a vital part in the life of Cyprus for thousands of years, is woven deeply into the fabric of the island. Lots of monasteries and covents. Don't forget that Cyprus also near the Holy Land Israel ...

They drive British style. That means, the 'wrong side of the road.' Appraoch a roundabout and watch how the other cars interact before you go into it. It is hair raising at best and terrifying otherwise.

by rhunne

Larnaca has strong links with the past, as a city it has been continually inhabited for thousands of years. The city is a continuation of the ancient Kingdom of Kition, which legend states, was founded in 2,300B.C. by the great grandson of Noah, Kittim. In the late Bronze Age Kition became a Greek Colony, then the city became an important port for the Phoenicians with the expansion of their empire. Close links were maintained with mainland Greece and this was reflected by the Athenian General's efforts to liberate Kition from the Persians. The city of Larnaca increased in importance during the early part of the 20th century when all the Turkish consulars and merchants resided there.
